Re: Mirotone 3220 buffing

“3M Perfect It” is the only polish I used on Miritone clear, however you mention polishing after 1000 grit, this is only the beginning. You’ll then want to cut at 2000 grit and then again at 3000 grit, THEN introduce the polish. The extra steps will make a world of difference to the finish. Hope thi...

R.I.P. David Churchill

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of the great David Churchill. Not only was David my mentor, I am proud to call him my friend. I met David many years ago in the early days of my electric guitar building. David would ask me to bring around my builds and he would offer advice and guidance, hel...

Re: New guinea rosewood finger board and bridge

No way I would use such a soft timber on a structural item such as a fingerboard.

It’s asking for too much trouble,

Not only will it be too soft and make the guitar neck like rubber, but I also would assume it to have trouble holding the frets in long term.

Re: Nozzle Size HVLP

I’m going to go opposite to what the guys above are saying

When spraying clear coats I prefer a larger nozzle.

I used 2k paint and if spraying colour I like a 1.4

When spraying clear I like a 1.8

I feel I get better flow with the larger nozzle on clear coats.

Re: Re Coating Danish Oil too Quickly.....Problems??

Danish oil is fairly forgiving, so unless you’re seeing any kind of issues I really wouldn’t worry.

When I went through a phase of danish oil finishes I think I used to do a few coats, let them cure for a day or so, do a fine sand and then recoat, let it cure again and then give it a light buff.

Re: Glueing the scarf joint

I never have issues with scarf slippage, it’s as simple as using two pins. So many people try to over complicate things with jigs and all sorts of things.

Scroll to the 30 second mark and your scarf problem will be solved:

Re: Mahogany wanted

I would be willing to order some if you had couple of pieces big enough to suit making one piece acoustic necks Steve No, it’d be 2pc if you wanted on the quarter. The whole cube is flat sawn lengths at body blank thickness ranging from 35mm to a bit over 40mm It’s the same stuff that sells up in a...

Re: Mahogany wanted

Freight to WA will cost more than the timber, this is extra heavy Mahogany. High quality stuff. If you were local to the area I’d have sad swing by. Where are you located, I have a tonne of it I need to clear out at bargain price. Lots of other timber that has to go too. I’m near Ballarat. Hi Allan,...

Looks very weird!

Has a soldering iron been used to try to steam out dings?
Not at all, it’s simply a finish reaction to direct heat making the compounds in the finish separate.

To the eye it looks like flakes floating in clear coat.

Re: Finish (shellac?) repair suggestions on Spanish classical

I gave it a light cut at there was superglue everywhere and now I can see this area clearly it looks 3D, as in, to get rid of the “flakes” the finish would have to be sanded to wood, not just the surface. That’s why I guessed it’s a shellac finish, it looks like the flakes have uncured and become vi...

Finish (shellac?) repair suggestions on Spanish classical

I’m comfortable with modern finishing however I’ve never working with older style finishes, so I’m writing in hope some of the traditional method guys here may have some insite. I have a classical on my bench for a service and clean up and I’m guessing it has a shellac or some other traditional styl...

Re: The Late Peter Scott-Young

I can’t answer as to what happened to the stock, I did hear about his passing quite some time ago.

I have purchased from Peter in the past, not often though as I rarely work with veneers, however for anyone who did Peter was the man to call.

They like warm engine bays too.

A while back I had one decide to make a meal out of the fuel injection wiring harness in my ute. Plenty of rodent bait went into the shed after that incident!
