Re: Performax 16/32 Sander - belt tracking

I had huge issues with my Jet version when I first got it. Tracked to one side no matter what i did. Given that I flipped the belt around and it still went the same way I discounted that as a problem. But - even a replacement conveyor assembly had the same issue - as did the display model at the sup...

Re: Piano scavenging adventures - ungluing the structure

Dismantled a piano myself. A heated up palette knife and a water spray bottle lifted the braces. Mind you the hide glue was quite brittle on mine.
Gotta couple of crates of the keys and hammer mechanisms etc that I still haven't found a use for but was loathed to dump :D

Are you going to make us guess? Nice bench, by the way.......... A sideline job for a mining company - they wanted a display set of rocks from one of their gold deposits. I've lapped them flat to 600 grit, but they won't take a good polish due to the alteration minerals in them. They want them brig...

3 builds on the go, all on hold - as Al (Ozziebluesman) justed noted, it's 33C with humidity between 70 and 80 % here in Townsville. Not a breath of wind.
Unless I want to build something specifically to be played in a sauna, things'll have to wait

Rookie mistake of not pre-drilling for that screw on the left - would have stopped the cracking. Other than that - looks pretty sound

I can get denatured ethanol fairly easily. I have read that is the same as denatured alcohol. Any thoughts? Am I overthinking this and should be just using meths? Cheers To keep it brief. Shellac is dissolved in ethanol. "Alcohol" encompasses a huge range of other chemistries. Denatured means it's ...

Which then led me to think of the use of a fridge for a flame proof cabinet, with a lock and a tray it would do the same thing possibly? Rob I use an old fridge as a dry box (juggling desiccant to keep things in a happy zone) - but I'd be wary of using one as a flame proof cabinet - either for solv...

How do the flapper wheels get on for Dust/saw dust Allan? I would think the woodcarver style instrument wouldn't require as much extraction. The Arbortech doesn't create sawdust- just high velocity wood chips ! Full protective clothing a must, the debris from a chainsaw blade on an angle grinder re...

I typically have to step over two dogs and a cat whilst making shavings in the shed :D The youngest pup is still likely to make off with an interesting looking tool or bit of timber, so he at least prompts me to try and keep things relatively clean and not leave things lying around. Of the na...

Re: Belt alignment on jet 10-20.

Hi Paul, this should be "simple" - it's just a belt going round 'n' round :D But they can be twitchy if the tension is not even across the rollers. Given it worked fine before, start with the assumption that the conveyor assembly is OK (not out of square, bushings for rollers binding etc). If you ha...

Re: Belt alignment on jet 10-20.

Hi Paul, have you tried flipping the belt around the other way ? If it still rides the same way it may actually be the belt. I had hassles with brand new belts on a 16-32. No matter what I did it would drift to the outside. Even with one side tight to bursting and the other flapping loose. Checked e...

Re: Advice needed - patching sanded-through top

Have to agree. You'll have a hard time making that go away. Even shellac & dust fill will likely be darker and youll never match that grain, colour variation running through. If you can't live with it as a first time build and don't want to go the stain the lot approach - turn it round and make a fe...

Sad but true Nick, but it's the way things are going in my neck of the woods and a lot of other uni's. Plenty of space for retail outlets, open plan "student experience" zones and whatever other buzz word is going round at the moment - little in the way of practical space to do the job and give real...

Re: AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!

Tend to agree with Allen and Markus. Shellac (flakes etc) does have a shelf life and keeping sealed in a fridge is the best way to try and extend it. As for the 100% ethanol, well, that is best - but I've had just as good success with decent grade meth'. Ethanol doesn't want to stay at 100%, it is e...

First year at uni - one of the guys I was sharing with admitted he had no idea how to cook boiled potatoes (!) and asked for help. I didn't really believe him when the pan of water started to bubble away and he asked "how do you tell if it's boiling"? - Without thinking I joked - "Stick your hand in...

Ditto on the 16/32.

Just an additional note - had huge issues with "legit" belts direct from Carbatec along the way. Not their fault, but an entire batch had an issue with the seam and would not track straight at all.
