Re: how to bend silver ash?

Just a question which might have already been addressed. Did you support your bindings with a slat at least on the outside? How long did you wait before bending and how much moisture in any form did you apply?

Re: Your mission, should you choose...thoughts on fossilised

Hi Kim, One option you might liker to entertain is laminating the Red gum with carbon fibre cloth on the inside. After you have shaped the wood on the mould you could then laminate and glue the Red gum and the Carbon fibre. Having done this you could then "back fill" with resin from the outside with...

Australian Tonewoods website Down

Just a heads up to say that the site is not functioning and might be compromised at the domain level. I am uncertain about the why this has happened and it might become clearer tomorrow.

Australian Tonewoods

Just a heads up for any forum members who may not be aware that I have some material on offer at the moment. Of particular interest is SILVER WATTLE acacia dealbata which has most often ended up as a chipping resource. It is a striking tone wood similar to Blackwood but with a more consistent and u...

Side Bending Alpine Ash

It was brought to my attention that Alpine Ash was tricky to bend. The only issue i had previously was blue spotting from iron ions in the water, so I used distilled water to manage that. I should say that if you use too much moisture it will react so finding the right amount may require a little tw...

Re: Jarrah for a neck blank?

Not all Jarrah has figure/wavy grain. So if you find a piece give it a try. You may even want to consider using the Jarrah in a laminated form to eliminate any untoward transverse or torsional twisting.

Re: Highfield Ukulele Workshop

Thanks guys for the comments. Preparation of jigs, logistics and setup took about a week. However now that the kit is there it is only the wood and consumables that need processing and sending. I think I successfully enabled all the people at the workshop to achieve success by minimising the drama o...

Re: Grafted Walnut Build

Hi Col, The light areas are predominantly sapwood. The walnut is also a graft between English and a hybrid called Paradox. I was going to use the other heartwood section of the set but it tended toward a back sawn cut. I have however found that the walnut is quite stable and could have used more of ...

Thanks Allen. I must check my other sets for evidence of the spots. Perhaps a solvent or a light bleach might minimise the effect.

Alaskan Yellow Cedar Spots

Any thoughts about this? After applying MinWax (wipe on Polyurethane) spots appeared on the surface of the soundboard. I can only conclude that there might be localised areas of cedar oil, a reaction with the MinWax or some form of fungal activity. There wasn't any overspray or foreign material in ...

Re: Goodbye Go Bar 1 Model 2

In operation the x-brace goes down first , then the assembly goes over the top. As the feet (nutserts) are elevated, you can then place each minor brace into position then wind down the foot. The only urgency is clamping the x-brace. Cost wise the System 30 T-Slot extrusions was about $90 and the nu...

I think you would simply flip it or locate the non-symmetrical components on the opposite x-brace leg.

Goodbye Go Bar 1 Model 2

If you have an aversion to aluminium read no further! This particular bracing option would be used in conjunction with a poly carbonate template to correctly locate the braces. However there plenty of options if you want to vary the location of each brace. The x-brace point is adjustable and the ea...

Re: Good bye go bar?

Just an edit to my last post.

There are at least two variables to consider that work against even clamping: 1. varying downward movement of the soundboard into the built-in radius of the top, be it symmetric or asymmetric across it surface , and 2. the deflection/flex of the jig.
