Re: Intonation Problem

No, Haven’t figured it out yet. Tried Chiladni again and there is definitely a resonance around 220-230hz but poorly defined. I can move it around with clay to n the top, but makes no difference and can’t seem to get rid of it all together

Re: Intonation Problem

Thanks, I’ll check that email n the morning. I did dampen the after length of strings between the bridge and tailpiece. That didn’t change things. I'll check the tailpiece itself.

Re: Intonation Problem

I’ve not resolved this problem yet. Tried tuning the guitar first up then down one half semi-tone with the idea that if the problem was a scale note conflict, tuning half way between scale notes “should” negate this. It doesn’t and the problem zone from Ab to A# doesn’t move. Tried a different brand...

Re: Intonation Problem

I checked that peak near 440. Inspection with guideline indicates it is 452 on that FRC Having already tried added bridge mass, I took all the clay and the 3.5gr mustaches off. Here’s the FRC: 0254D43C-A9FB-4BCE-972E-A3567C2BEE3D.png Peaks are 100hz, 214, 252, 343, 370, 454, 503, 559, 705, 811 This ...

Re: Intonation Problem

Maybe I should add this is a Selmer style guitar, the kind I usually build. An air mode of 96-115hz and a main monopole of 230-260hz is very common in this style guitar.

Intonation Problem

Happy New Year, hope you all are doing okay with this virus business. Guitar work has been going along okay here, but I got a problem I can't figure out My most recent guitar has an intonation problem around A3 (220hz). A3 and the surrounding notes Ab and Bb are all 8-12 cents flat on all three stri...

Re: VA, opening saved files

Thanks Trevor, yep, that's the problem. I guess I was using VA 2011 before and didn't realize 9.06 would not view files. I'm now using 9.06 because we could not get the Frequency Meter in 11 to work at the workshop. I downloaded the executable only VA 2011 version and it works fine for viewing saved...

Re: VA, opening saved files

When I do that, the Open File shows as Open File (not available) and no amount of clicking gets it done. I wonder if this is because I am running VA under on a Mac via Parallels.

Re: VA, opening saved files

Thanks John, I’m running 9.06 and I see you are running VA 2011. In 9.06, the are only two tabs on the control box in the lower right corner. One is Main, the other is More Options, but when I open More Options, all I get is a Frequency Compensation condolence box.

VA, opening saved files

Feeling kinda stupid here, can't figure out how to open saved files in VA 9.06. I used to do this all the time but stopped using VA 4-5 years ago and have forgotten. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Re: Selmer question

I've been off the board for a while, just saw your post. There is not prescribed depth to the relief, but you need at least 3mm to have the necessary clearance. I usually carve down to the base of the ebony head stock plate which is typically 3.5mm. I've seen some guitars where the reliefs are deepe...

Amazing saxophone repair, I won't even know where to begin with something like that. :cl I bet that is one happy saxophone owner. Your "Master of Nothing" signature line needs to be qualified and updated.

Re: Vacuum molding

Yes, that's it, WEST 105 Resin. I use the 205 fast hardener for laminating. Though "fast", there is still plenty of working time, especially once it is rolled out. I've never lost a batch due to kicking before I could get it applied. Once rolled out, you have at least 30-40 minutes working time if n...

Re: Vacuum molding

Oh, another thing. I've found short nap 3" foam rollers work best for applying epoxy to the veneers. i use Wooster R039 trim rollers or WEST brand foam roller cover cut in half. This applies a thin, but uniform layer of glue. I wet out both faces of an interface to insure against dry spots. I have u...

Re: Vacuum molding

No experience with Nomex to date, but have a piece big enough for a back I'd like to try some time. I only use the fancy veneers on the outside. With the Selmer guitar types I build, poplar for the middle plies and mahogany for show piece on the inside is standard. Both are light weight, glue well a...

Re: Vacuum molding

BTW, I typically get 23 inches of vacuum with my set up, far from perfect, but more than adequate. I get excellent glue penetration, not voids and good reproduction of the mold shape even in the recurves.

Re: Vacuum molding

As Ross says, I've been vacuum molding backs for my gypsy guitars, both spherical and violin back shaped (I have a hard time saying arch-top back :-) Made the violin back shaped molds by gluing medium density PVC foam sheet to a 3/4" MDF board and carved out the shape in the foam, tapered into the M...

Re: Spherical fret ends

Yes, I would be interested. I've done it by hand using files with the frets in the fingerboard. Gets the job done but nearly impossible to keep the ends lined up so the ends lay in a line when sighted. Minor point I guess, but an element of craftsmenship I suppose.

String tension

Wondering if there are elements of design that affect string tension other than the obvious like string gauge, string construction, string height off the frets and scale length? I ask because players sometimes tell me some of my guitars with all the elements just listed being identical, seem to have...
