Re: Another wood ID?

Curly has it right. There is no chance that that is a natural figure. Man-made with veneers, and nicely done.

Re: Strings

I am a big fan of Elixir strings, EXP's are not a bad string either, not quite as smooth as Elixir but they last a similar amount of time. I will throw a cheap set of Alice or some other rubbish on for the initial setups, always bust a High E or a B string taking them on and off. Interestingly enou...

Re: Bridge failure - how do I remove a damaged bridge??

No need to heat the knife, and less chance of finish damage if you don't. Mask the top with cardboard and foil as described. (I like to use a layer of styrofoam covered with foil). Heat with a heat lamp. It will take a while to get hot (maybe 10-15 minutes?). Pay attention to runout. This is crucial...

Re: Masking tape that works?

I keep thinking that there must be a paint-on masking that would works for this. Somewhere I have a can of liquid latex that I want to try. Has anyone here found a liquid product that they can recommend?

Not beer. I have that.

That was the intent of my statement as well.

Re: Got a repair. Opinions?

A few things I would do differently: 1--I like to heat the bridge, not the "putty knife". I mask the top of the guitar with a 1 cm layer of styrofoam covered with aluminum foil, with a cut-out for the bridge, and focus a 250 watt heat lamp on the bridge. Heating the knife will cause finish damage. I...

Re: Hide glue

I'll just add that I worry less about the things we can measure, but can't explain, than I do about the things we can explain, but can't measure.

Re: Hide glue

So yes you can make a study of 2 items to make a comparison Of course you can. Just cancel the term/idea "vs." in your project. It shouldn't even appear in your thoughts, much less in its written form at any stage of the study because it is what I have said: not a scientific approach. At its best, ...

Re: Removing frets from an ebony fingerboard

Geez, if some extraterrestrial read up on this thread they certainly will not attack planet earth, because they will know that they would have no chance to win against its inhabitants which are playing really huge guitars (size calculated on the basis of commonly used fret tang width  ). :...
