When will Gore/Gilet books be back in stock?

They had these books in my university library. A student took out the design book and never brought it back, I don't blame em. I was thirsty for knowledge so I got the librarian to order the books in again, I ended up basing most of my dissertation on them. Now I'm kicking myself for not buying the ...

Re: Crazy, stupid, archtop style, 6 string bass - how to build it?

When I made a ABG (acoustic bass guitar) I just took a basic j200 style jumbo body and stuck four strings on it. it sounds great plenty of volume, why do anything else? My mane concern for a 6 string would be that it's a hell off a lot of tension, more like 100 kg rather then around 50 kg of tension...

Nice work, and all with such a basic set up. He doesn't even have a vac for all the inlay dust.

Here you can still see the sanding marks in the pearl I would not pay the money he's charging for shoddy work like that.

Re: Interesting reading

All sounds very clever but seems rather circumstantial he provides very little evidence to back up his theory. Yes a soundboard is always going to act like a flat plate to a certain extent, and there's little you can do to radically change this; but doesn't mean you should scrap bracing. Bracing isn...

Re: Some new design ideas...

Looks like a guitar, with a load of shit bolted to it. Why not add a cymbal and a bass drum, he could be a one man band. The rest of the innovations aren't particularly original either, but then again I'm cynical. couldn't find the youtube videos to see what it all sounds like. If you like to get cr...

Re: Cocobolo rosette nightmare

Thanks for all the replies I have been away. Yes I think it is the spruce swelling due to increased humidity. Indeed probably the only solution is to strip the varnish right back not so easy with Pre cat varnish but perhaps I will bite the built at some point. Might think twice before doing a thick ...

Re: Cocobolo rosette nightmare

Yeah initially I thought it was shrinkage, but how can this be if the the joins are raised makes no sense, indeed it is like the glue has swelled up. I'm wondering if perhaps this swelling wouldn't happen with epoxy. I suppose I could pop the pieces in the oven for a time to dry them out next time. ...

Cocobolo rosette nightmare

Okay so I made this segmented rosette out of back & side Cocobolo off cuts, it came out well all the joins looked good was very happy with it. A couple of months after finishing it something weird has happened, the joins have now become very visible. Rather than the joins becoming sunken in-between ...

Re: Tear out in a top, disaster or opportunity?

being inventive is one of the things I like about guitar making, I always try an make a feature of mistakes. I cut the purfling channels with a purfling cutter and scalpel, It doesn't take long to run it round the top. once marked out a scalpel will slice right through the top, I'v found even a shar...

Washburn style parlour build

Okay here at London Metropolitan we all have to make one of these ladder braced parlour guitars based, on an old Washburn plan. My tutor Nick Pyall http://www.nickpyall.co.uk/ is quite the Historian, having done his dr. thesis on this stuff. He insures me that at the time these small gems weren't ca...

Re: Window Function for measuring Q values

Okay so I changed the sample rate to 22050 so with a sample size of 262144 that would give a resolution of 0.0841Hz surely that should be pretty good no? now I'm getting values for Q over 400 hundred 0_o hmmm I guess I should just choose a setting and stick with it so at least I get a relative compa...

Window Function for measuring Q values

Hi what would be the most accurate window function for measuring q values? I'v been using the Hann (Hanning) function but I don't know if another one would be better? Also I'm not sure whether is should average out the whole sample or what, I'v been using SpectruPlus and setting peak to 'infinite ho...

Re: Australia misses out on Mario's wood

wow I know it's lutz but Are you willing to spend that much money on a soundboard, spruce is cheap as chips up that way. How do you even know it's going be any good, I doubt this guy actually tests any properties of these boards, there's not even a close up picture.

Try contacting Mark French: http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~rmfrench/Contact.html He's done a lot of that type of work. Tell him I sent you  . Depending on exactly what you're after, you can get a long way using a microphone and a spectrum analyser like Visual Analyser (google it). It's a free down...

accelerometers as sensors for FFT ect.

Hi there I'm new my names Alf and I'm a BSc Musical Instruments student in London Metropolitan uni, England. Just wondering is anyone has tried using accelerometers as pickups for spectrograms/Q testing. From what little I'v read they tend to have a limited bandwidth but that's okay for my purpose a...
