Lapacho L00

I finally got around to making a set of Gibson L00 moulds during Covid lockdown and had a B&S set of Lapacho that I was intrigued to try out. It was a bit of an experiment as there's not much info out there, except it's particularly hard & believe me, that's an understatement! Sonically however, the...

Re: 8 string baritone

Thanks Mark. Bracing was pretty much standard X but I did indeed beef them up a bit from my previous attempts, as much for the heavier strings as the 2 octaves that are only very light. I also used some carbon fibre in the x braces. I'll bore everyone with a photo....... So far the top has been very...

Haha. That must make for even luckier family members as recipients of them as gifts then :D

First ukulele......

While I waited for the lacquer to dry on the baritone I posted yesterday, I was confronted by the horrible realisation that I no longer had an excuse to ignore all those pesky real world obligations. A few leftover bits from previous builds & the body outline & brace pattern from a concert u...

Re: 8 string baritone

Thanks for the encouraging comments chaps. :) I followed Taylor's lead & used a 27" scale length as it was the sound of theirs that inspired me in the first place. It's proved to be a good choice as this one has a nice balance of enormous bottom end power with that lovely 12 string like jangle on th...

8 string baritone

Hi folks. When someone mentioned an "8 string baritone" to me a couple of years back, I kept quiet & googled it rather than admit my ignorance. When I came across a couple of demos of Taylor's offering of the concept, I was immediately smitten.... Such an incredibly satisfying sound..... Once again ...

Re: Short scale parlour

Thanks Chaps. Your considered & perceptive comments are always encouraging. Yeah I reckon it all came together well too : ) I hadn't heard of Movingui either when Barry Kerr suggested it as an answer to my request for a full hardwood top B & S set that would be good sonically, without breaking the b...

Short scale parlour

I decided that I'd better get into my 5th acoustic around late October if I was to get one built before last year slipped away. A relatively plain, shortish scale parlour with movingui top, back & sides, silky oak neck, ebony & MOP for the rest seemed to give me some chance of a reasonably quick bui...

Re: Coming out reprise

I ended up coming back to Mirrortone Trent. Unfortunately that was after literally months of poor weather every weekend & trying to get an acceptable finish with Durabond as a trial. I don't know what I was doing wrong but I gave up in the end & started over with what I know. Others seem to swear by...

Re: Coming out reprise

Thanks Martin

The bridge shape is nice I have to agree.
Full credit must go to Mr Somogyi for "inspiring" it however.

Coming out reprise

Hi again folks Way back in March, I suggested I was about half way through a maple OM build. I was wrong. Various setbacks during the year meant that it only got finished a few weeks ago. I did learn that under that pretty face, the quilted maple has an evil side........ It caused me quite a bit of ...

Re: Coming Out Pt2

It's very nice to get some positive encouragement from both parts of my first post. Thanks for that chaps! I finished the Weiss with Penetrol wood oil as an experiment Mark & am very happy with the result. Rubbing it in with wet & dry gives a lovely silken & durable surface & from past experience an...

Coming Out Pt2

Hello again folks. It appears I got the posting thing right & even received a few positive comments. Thanks for that! The boys were just hitting their teens when we started the electric and they're just hitting their twenties now Mark. Well during the LMI build, it seems I got bitten by some strange...

Coming Out.....

Hi Folks I've been lurking on this forum for a few years & thought it might be time to say g'day with a bit of history. I'll admit to a bit of trepidation after seeing the superb work that pops up here. It started for me about 8 years ago with the fateful words "maybe we should build a guitar" I was...
