Re: Sealing bindings/ purflings before pore filling alternates
Yeah that’s pretty much what I was getting at Sorry for the bad wording, Ok well I certainly won’t tape of the binding and top like that so looks like I’ll just seal top and bindings with shellac. Another instruction they mention is wiping oily wood like rosewood with with thinners or spirits to ge...

The next scheduled courses are in October at Robbie O'Brien's place (Colorado), if your travels take you in that direction.

Re: Sealing bindings/ purflings before pore filling alternates
As Talldad notes the question isn't clear. Are you talking about masking off top and bindings so you can pore fill the sides?
Re taping newspaper to the top.....I wouldn't do that. Any solvent will leach out the ink and stain your top.

Re: OM size Nylon String Crossover
I have visible brace print through on a Gore style neoclassical I completes 2 years ago. Structurally the guitar is not compromised so Im treating it as part of the "character" of the guitar.....same as visible soft/hard grain lines on the top under a thin finish.

Re: Removing Maton Fretboards ?
Sounds like it might be epoxy?
I use epoxy on my fretboards and getting them off is simply a matter of patience and careful work with heat and a palette knife.

Can't say I've ever seen billets of spruce on sale except for use on archtops and other carved top instruments.
Without thinking too hard about this I cant see much advantage to buying spruce in billet form and sawing out tops yourself..unless you want a run of matching tops from the same billet.

Re: current reputable intensive workshops?
A timely thread as I'm currently helping a friend complete a build after the school he was attending shut down leaving him with a half completed guitar and no guidance as to where he should be going with same.
Some good schools around but also some dodgey operators plying their wares.

Sorry Steve...should have put in a plug for your school as well as Brisbane Guitar Making School.
+1 for Australian Guitar Making School. Note Ive had several friends attend courses at both schools and they were very happy with their experiences.

Re: Walnut bend
First question..how thick is that side?
When I was using blankets and forms for my bending I used to start the waist bend on a bending iron before sticking it in the bender.
These days I bend by hand. Im old fashioned and enjoy being in constant contact with the wood as it bends.

Re: Gore plate thickness maths help
My last 12 string build was basically based on a 6 string dreadnaught but with an extra tone bar across the lower bout. All other dimensions were kept the same. The only significant difference as far as I can see between a 6 string an 12 string is string tension and a bit more fiddling around with s...

This forum (on "the book") used to be a lively place. Now it can be weeks between posts. I've posted some things that should be of interest to those who have the book, and, save for Trevor (thanks, Trevor!), I haven't gotten a single comment. I hear you Greg and do read your posts. I did actually h...
