Re: Spraying Hard Shellac

Hi Gents, thank you all for your time and insight. I have been very careful to use clean rags, hands and eliminate contaminants. I have a brand new compressor (oil free I believe) and inline filter at the gun. I do use those dodgy mats but not during or after sanding, but I will get rid of them anyw...

Spraying Hard Shellac

Hi All, At risk of raising the wrath of members, I am posting a query about spraying hard shellac. I have looked high and low for info re. this and have found a lot of people saying they spray it but not a lot of detail, and I'm new to spraying. I'm have a basic stew mac gun (0.8 mm tip) as a starti...

Should I try adding moisture before clamping?

Re: Twisted

Thanks Gents, I was in Carbatec one day and found it there, dressed. I was quite surprised and it was cheap. Thicknessed and rough shape and truss rod route and then left for a week or 2 before I had time to glue on FB, then noticed twist. Weather has changed significantly in Perth the last couple o...

Re: Neck Taper

Thanks again everyone, there's a lot of different methods out there! I'll persevere with the safety planer, I think I need to put together a better jig.

Twisted

One of my Qld maple necks has decided to take a little turn... should I throw it out (or on the fire)?
I hope the photo tells the story.

Re: Neck Taper

Thanks John, yeah that's pretty much how I do it, with a safety planer, but I should spend more time perfecting it like you have.
For some reason the safety planers make me feel a little uneasy....

Neck Taper

Hi All,
Simple question, but I'm interested in different methods people are using to taper the neck prior to shaping, I'm not happy with how I'm currently doing it...
Cheers,
Ben

I use Rothco frost, they post over from the UK, great service, super thin decals. Probably pricey, but Im happy with them.

Perth

Howdy All, I have just moved to Perth from Coolangatta for work and had to leave my workshop there for the time being. So, I am hoping some Perthians can help me find a workshop to do a little bit of work in. At this stage I only need to do some body contours, sanding and french polishing, and I hav...

Re: Black marks/stain in grain

Hi All,
Sorry for the delay in responding, moved over to Perth for a new role.
The vinegar removed most of the stain but might have to try the harsher chems to clean it all up.
Cheers!

Re: Black marks/stain in grain

With water and after it had dried, you can see on the right hand side the staining isnt bad and I gave it a light sand wich seemed to work ok but there is still black in the flame so I stopped to see if I could find another solution rather than sand anymore..

Black marks/stain in grain

Howdy All, Just a quick (probably silly) question, I have an unfinished flame QLD maple cap on a guitar and I sprayed it with water to bring out the grain and wood colour and after the wood dried I was left with a black stain in the grain covering half of the guitar...what did I do..? Is it because ...

Re: Timber identification

Thanks everyone, i will post a better close up photo shortly, and do the smell test, i have been cutting up some qld maple so will compare. I did think the grain looked like qld maple, but it's very orange..so thought maybe not. I definitely hope it is qld maple, i love it!
