Re: First commission

Thanks everyone, this is all great stuff. I enjoyed all the opinions and differences thereof on pricing. When I had originally given a price, I gave a caveat that it was for a 'standard' build and if they wanted ancient spruce, a cutaway, elaborate inlays etc etc it would be extra. So I think I have...

Re: First commission

Steve, they have asked for a jumbo with darker wood for back and sides and seems pretty amenable to suggestions for everything else wanting only restrained aesthetic. I sent a picture of a Chechen B+S set I got off BobtheBuilder and they now seem dead keen on it. I was hoping to steer them to engelm...

First commission

While I've been content to just make guitars for family and friends (sometimes whether they want them or not  ), I have been approached by a potential customer for a commission build. When asked, I had thrown out a number which I thought was pretty reasonable for a handmade guitar but unlikely...

Re: Advanced Hard Shellac Finish from Gore/Gilet

My first go at this method didn't go well either. I think I was working too wet and I ended up with drips and messes in place. But it did fill all the pores and enough finish to level. I then reverted to a slower Robbie O'Brien method but got a good result.

Re: 100 tutes

Yes thanks Steve. I used 3 of your tutes the other day to remove the neck of my brother in law's Taylor, glue up a crack in the heel and repair some lacquer chips. So glad I remembered your tute on removing the neck, I was just about to rip off the lable when I remembered.

I really appreciated!

Re: Broken drill bit in tie block

Thanks everyone, I will give these a go. It is funny how when you're a bit downbeat your problem solving skills can go out the window. I think having to remove the 1st bridge, mucking up the finish a bit removing it and then struggling with broken bit knocked my resilience. I really appreciate repli...

Broken drill bit in tie block

Boy, my current build is giving me no end of grief. I am making a new bridge after the first one split under string tension along the lamination while stringing up. I noticed however that one of the 18 holes on the new bridge hadn't gone all the way through the tie block. Using a eggbeater style had...

Re: Compensated Nut Jig and mini pin-router

I have been frequently looking at this thread and the jig described in the book and then I've been procrastinating making a pin router jig using either drill press or dremel for a while now. But I have finally figured out a different method The most accurate machine in the shop is the table router o...

I'm having terrible trouble trying to get paypal working having not used it in years, changed phone number etc ad nauseam, but I really would like to contribute. Any chance of a PM or an email with EFT details and I could just transfer you some money?

Re: Cutting 1mm slots / rings for rosettes

As regards to the use of superglue on raw spruce, I have found occasionally that the superglue stains the wood a greenish tint. Does anybody else experience this and what would the reason be for it only happening on some spruce samples and not others? Ross Yes there is some staining with CA on spru...

Re: Cutting 1mm slots / rings for rosettes

At the Brisbane AGMS we now wash the rosette area with CA rather than shellac (before cutting and any end grain is exposed) after seeing it on the Michael Greenfield vid. We haven't had a student build with fuzziness from the SM dremel circle cutter since.
