Solid-body Instructor Wanted (Brisbane)

Hey lutherie lovers The Brisbane Guitar Making School is looking for a solid body instructor to join our team. Initially, this will be to take over an established weekly evening class, but there is scope for more as we have some expansion plans. The class runs from 6pm to 10pm and enrolment is curre...

Re: King billy & Amboyna nylon

I've been so busy this year that every time I try and catch up on the forum I never seem to get to the bottom of the unread posts and so never post anything. Got there today :D

Here's a couple of sound samples of this guitar:

Re: hello and a first question for King billy pine top thickness

I find KBP is very floppy across the grain and you need to keep it at least as thick as cedar. So for a ballpark on an OM, I would be keeping it about 3.5mm.

Re: pickup for falcate classical or steel string?

I recommend under saddle over transducers for falcate as the falcate braces can prevent ideal transducer location. Mind you I did install a K&K trinity pro recently and it sounded NICE.! But it only worked because I used a pinless bridge which allowed me to play with falacate placement in the design...

Re: Silver Quandong & Southern Blue Gum Multiscale

LOL..sounds a bit like the multiscale commission I did a few years back. I did follow that build quite closely and then reread it a couple of times while I was building this one. I have to say, figuring out how to make the pinless bridge for proper string fall and then locating the bridge was one o...

Re: Silver Quandong & Southern Blue Gum Multiscale

How did the blue gum work for the top? The SB is Silver Quandong. The B&S are Southern Blue Gum and they bent without a problem., sanded well and had reasonably small pores. There were some sap pockets, but that is what attracted the client to the wood. So it was included not just in the back but a...

Silver Quandong & Southern Blue Gum Multiscale

This one took me a long time! Over a year, 15 months from when the client picked out wood to delivery. Mind you he also had a very specific, detailed and long list. The new owner is a consummate player and I found it really enjoyable being pushed by the specificity in addition to some new areas. Fir...

Re: Goings on in the workshop

I haven't been doing much building much lately, but I have been doing lots of jig-making. Sooooo many universal spreaders inspired by Beau Haham's vids, I surely will never need spreaders again. Oh and saw guards and clamp storage... yawn! But I have also had a great time building a new adaption to ...

Re: Action & relief for C# open setup

The amplitude of oscillation is entirely dependent on the pluck displacement. Of course, it takes less force to displace a lower tension string for the same oscillation amplitude of a higher tension string. For the same feel you have to go to a higher tension string set, i.e. heavier strings, which...

Re: Action & relief for C# open setup

My multiscale commission built for Kym was to be used in a variety of alternate tunings. I ended up just setting up for standard tuning. You're compensating at saddle only or saddle and nut? It plays beautifully in standard open e at the moment but it just can't work in C# standard. Funnily enough,...

Action & relief for C# open setup

I thought I had posted this thread the other night, but it looks like I closed the window before submitting the post. Anyhoo, that post was ramble; as a second swing: I am setting up a multiscale that the client would like the setup to C# open. The scale is 679. mm bass and 647.7mm on the treble (26...

Trevor is a piss poor cult leader but he's a gun leading edge guitar maker :)

It's probably from having too much on his plate with a whole army to run. I mean we are at war with large guitars as we speak.

Lovely little instrument there Bob. The finish looks really good in the pic too. I'm hanging out to hear your v brace thoughts once you get strings on it. I saw a builder post a v brace build on another forum but it unfortunately got hijacked by armchair IP and legal arguments before getting shut do...
