Well, it isn't pretty (I obviously have to work on my epoxy spreading skills!), but my first falcate top is glued up! Thanks for the help thus far!

Re: First Falcate underway! Plate Thickness question?

Thanks, Trent! I'll feel more of a sense of accomplishment once the top is fully braced! (Fingers crossed)

First Falcate underway! Plate Thickness question?

So I'm finally getting around to making a Falcate braced steel string guitar! Very exciting! I have a couple of questions about plate thickness. For the Top plate, Trevor lists an f value of 75 to plug into the thickness calculation, but doesn't specify the bracing. For my bear claw sitka top, I get...

Re: Bolt on bolt off neck - order of operations

Trevor, you're a saint. That makes perfect sense.

I just closed the box and the gap at the saddle is a little less than 3mm, so I'll work to bring that down a bit. On to the neck join next!

Thanks!

Thanks for your help! I think it's starting to make sense to me now.

I guess we'll find out!!

Bolt on bolt off neck - order of operations

To this point, I've been building guitars (5, now) with mortise and tenon, bolt on necks using furniture bolts and barrel nuts. With holes drilled oversize and the barrel nut allowing for some degree of angle variance, there's a lot of slop built into that system. It certainly makes it easy to fit t...

Re: Tapping panels for thickness?

Well, I tapped the Redwood top I have... mixed results. I'm intending on building a Gore-style J45 (very light X-bracing). Redwood Top Thickness.png YM Dynamic Redwood Top.png I tried several different tapping methods and got pretty consistent results. This is a piece of tempered Redwood. It's very ...

Re: Tapping panels for thickness?

Well, after some trial and error, I got some results! Using numbers from the book and the threads you pointed out, I was able to come close to your target thickness for Englemann #1, so I think my equations work. However, 2.3mm for a back seems a leeeeetle too thin. So perhaps my frequency measureme...

Re: Tapping panels for thickness?

Ok, rereading, I realize the formula I'm looking for is 4.5-7. One confusion I have is what is the variable "p"(square root) in the top line?

Elong/Ecross? Density?

I think I'm understanding the rest.

Thanks!

Tapping panels for thickness?

Hello all! Quick question (hah) - how would you interpret these results? Do they make sense? I'm tapping the back panels for a new guitar. They are slightly figured walnut, 4mm thick, 217mm x 605mm, mass 297g. If I had to guess, I'd read the results: fL = 38 fC = 98 fLC = 52 It seems like this rough...

Re: Where do I go from here? (Spectrum Analysis)

Hi Martin, thanks so much for your response! The side weights are attached per Gore/Gilet - I think they're pretty solid. I'm guessing my top is not very responsive - it's a standard X-brace and if I had to guess, I'd say it's a little over-built. I didn't lock in any of the lower braces, so that mi...

Re: Where do I go from here? (Spectrum Analysis)

Hi Trevor, so great of you to respond, thanks so much! I don't have a Chladni rig built, but I'm looking into that. Attached is the back tapping that I did. Also some pictures of the bracing. The top is standard X bracing, but the lower braces are short of the sides (not glued in). Looks like I don'...

Where do I go from here? (Spectrum Analysis)

Hello everyone! I just finished construction of a Spalted Maple Jumbo with X-bracing and a live back. It's my second build, so I'm kind of fumbling through at this point. I was fortunate enough to take a class with Trevor in Denver so I've gotten the bug to try and add some Gore-like touches (live b...
