Re: Reducing BOBO neck weight

No, Dave. I’ve been looking at the adjustable (Smallman) neck instead.

For bolt on, I like the look of this:

It avoids having to have a mortise tool.

Establishing the target plate thickness for Flamenco guitars

I have spent all day in Excel and section 4.5.2 of the Design book. I think I have achieved what I set out to do, but would appreciate it if someone could check my numbers and spreadsheet formulas. You can see all the numbers in the spreadsheet and click on the cells for the formulas here: https://d...

Thanks Alan. I’ve just bought the app and can see it’s going to be very useful.

Re: Reducing BOBO neck weight

Hi Dave, John Ray weighed wooden pegs vs machine heads, including the respective removal of wood and found about 100g difference. Thanks for taking the time to make all the other suggestions. The neck is the main issue for me and I know I need to be more selective about what samples of wood I choose...

Re: Reducing BOBO neck weight

Thanks John and Martin. On reflection, I think the standard bolt-on design with aluminium bolt bar is more appropriate for a lightweight flamenco. I see also, that an elegant heel shape can be achieved (Fig. 14-23 build book) which isn't as chunky as some of the others. On the three flamenco plans I...

Reducing BOBO neck weight

Since first posting to this forum , I've built four flamenco guitars and made notes on each here: https://josswinn.org/2018/09/29/my-flamenco-guitar/ https://josswinn.org/2019/05/05/notes-on-guitar-3/ https://josswinn.org/2019/12/28/notes-on-guitar-4/ https://josswinn.org/2020/05/05/notes-on-a-flame...

Re: Help reading flamenco tap tone data

Thanks Dave. Apologies for picking the wrong forum topic.

I've just spent time in the other forum topic and found Trevor's video course on all of this, which has opened doors. It's making much more sense now. I reckon I'll be building my Chladni set up in the next couple of weeks...

Re: having a go at spectrums

If you still have problems, I covered a lot of stuff on collecting data using VA in the video series I did with Robbie O'Brien, Guitar Analysis and Testing with Trevor Gore , available from Robbie's website. I just bought this video course and it is a revelation. I've had your books for a while but...

Re: Help reading flamenco tap tone data

Thanks for looking at the data Alain, and apologies for mis-reading your name earlier. Trevor Gore includes a spectrum for a Conde guitar (Figure 3.2-11) and the peaks for it were: 80Hz, 170Hz, and 225Hz. He notes that it was an "excellent sounding flamenco guitar, but this example is rather extreme...

Re: Help reading flamenco tap tone data

Thanks Alan. I've still got guitars #2 and #5 so was able to tap the backs of those. I also put all the wav files through Adobe Audition and it's produced clearer data and charts, except for #4, which was clearly a poor recording. I've updated the online spreadsheet. Anyway, I think the new readings...

Re: Help reading flamenco tap tone data

Thanks blackalex1952 and DaveM. Chladni patterns, yes, but one step at a time! I'm going to get a microphone. I do have one, but an upgrade to MacOS seems to have stopped it being recognised. The cleanest data I've had so far as been with #5, which was the laptop mic and Adobe Audition. I don't know...

Help reading flamenco tap tone data

Hello, I've made 4 flamenco guitars over the last couple of years and recorded tap tone data, which I could do with some help interpreting. The data is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hebMsWpV0UL5uOZU4LyjrGR6tns5UydFfxAAl6p6oFs/edit?usp=sharing You can see in the four worksheets that I...

Re: Flamenco build details from the book

Your blog mentions no fingerboard tapering? You're talking about tapering of the sides of the blank or thickness...hard to tell from the photos. Yes, the sides (the width) are tapered all the way from the nut to the sound hole, but the thickness (depth) is constant. I was trying to avoid tapering t...

Re: Flamenco build details from the book

Looks great Joss. What did you weight come in at? Also do you have any FRC we can look at? Thank you. It weighs 1143g. Getting down to around 1100g was one of my main design goals, after reading the Gore/Gilet books. There's some tap tone data here: http://josswinn.org/2018/09/29/my-flamenco-guitar...

Re: Flamenco build details from the book

Just to say that I've finished making my flamenco guitar and there's a write-up on my blog . Thanks for the advice here and in the book. It was a great help and I'm pleased with the way it sounds. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/928/43796826392_89316db7f2_h.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1974/299...

Thanks, both, for all those references. I ordered all 7 BRBs from GAL a couple of weeks ago, so I guess they will arrive soon.

Data for a Smallman guitar?

I'm really enjoying the design book, even though I don't understand the maths. There are some very useful summaries of the consequences of the science in relation to material and design choices. Because it's so interesting, one thing I keep wishing I could see is some data from a Smallman guitar bec...

Re: Flamenco build details from the book

Thanks, Simonm. I hadn't thought about a three piece back but like the idea of it. Apparently, it's not easy finding top quality cypress these days. I spoke with, and ordered from, a major supplier of tonewood in the UK and he lamented that the really good stuff seems like a thing of the past. None ...

Thanks very much. I hadn't given the dome or neck angle much thought so far, so thanks for that. Yes, rosewood fretboard seems the way to go.

Flamenco build details from the book

Hello, this is my first post to this forum. I've just finished my first guitar , having learned with Roy Courtnall. It was a lattice of his design. For my second guitar, I want to build a Flamenco Blanca, applying what I can from my new Gore/Gilet books, as well as what I learned from Roy. I've foun...
