Re: New to the group and guitar building

Hi, Could this be a case of different browsers? Pics are upside-down for me - I'm using the latest version of Firefox (60.0.1) on Windows and FF on Android tablet. In an earier post from Cal, he said pics were ok on iPhone and iPad, but not on computer (what browser?). And now Dave said pics are ok ...

Re: New to the group and guitar building

Hi Martin,

*For me* the first post from Cal pics were the right-way-up, but all subsequent posts from Cal the pics have appeared to be upside-down.
(BTW Cal, nice looking stuff!)

Thanks,
GregL.

Re: Tenor Uke in Master Grade Australian Blackwood

Hi Allen,

Stunning!
I love any curly timber, but especially curly blackwood! And you've done justice to that curly blackwood!
Is the bracing blackwood too?
May I ask where you got the timber?

Thanks,
GregL.

Is that an oval soundhole? If so, how did you do that?
Thanks,

Re: bending qld maple

Thanks for the suggestions. Here's a pic of the timber:

(It's 2" thick)
I'm thinking of slicing it up for B&S for a terz (ie Martin size 5).
I'll cut the sides thin and soak in hot water and fabric softener and try to bend by hand on an iron.

Thanks,
GregL.

bending qld maple

Hi,

I've got a lump of highly figured Queensland Maple (Flindersia breyleyana) and was wondering how it bends?

Thanks,

Re: Same small body shape, very different guitars

Hi Trevor,

Both are very beautiful!!
What is the fretboard timber (both)? It looks like ebony - did you have any customs questions about ebony? I thought ebony was on CITES?

Thanks,

Hi Allen,

That is gorgeous!!! The whole instrument - but especially the sapele!
Was the sapele difficult to bend?
What woods did you use for the bridge - macassar and ?

Thanks,
GregL.

Hi Dennis,

Welcome, and I have a question:
Is it an "ordinary" banjo, or does it have a shorter-than-banjo neck? Tenor banjo, maybe, or banjo-ukelele?

Thanks,
Greg Luker.

Re: Some news + designing a dream workshop?

Hi Perry, You said "Bunnings have 33mm round edge, 1800mm long bench sections on sale at the moment. We're $35 each, currently $7 each." - do you know what Bunnings calls them? I had a quick look and can't find those panels on special - I could do with another bench! (My local Bunnings is Lismore, n...

Re: Compensated Nut Jig and mini pin-router

Hi Steve,

That's why I had moveable frets - so I could set it to any scalelength - from tenor uke to bass guitar (and beyond). (Have a look at the link and you'll see the moveable frets). Your idea of scalelength templates would make it quicker for "standard" scalelengths, though!

Thanks,
GregL.

Re: Compensated Nut Jig and mini pin-router

Hi Steve,

Perhaps you're thinking of me? I built a jig with adjustable "bridges" at both ends of a neck (ie nut and bridge ends) - also with moveable frets (viewtopic.php?f=24&t=6406&p=72363#p72363). But I'm so slack that I haven't used it yet!

Thanks,
GregL.

Re: Amp cabinet

Hi Jim, The "faceplate" is just inkjet printed onto glossy paper, from a CorelDraw file. It's definitely not roadworthy (the same as the head cabinet and the speaker box), but it's fine for sitting in my lounge room! I haven't seen any email from you. I tried sending a test message using the "Send e...

Re: Amp cabinet

Hi Jim,

Do you have any contact info for the old/new Rola 12PEG? I might be interested in getting one.
Also, I'd be interested in the mods for the 5E3, if you don't mind. Mine sounds good when driven but very loud!

Thanks,
GregL.

Re: Amp cabinet

Hi Jim,

That's great!
The amp above is also a 5E3 clone (all valve) that I made, sourced from Evatco (great Aussie amp parts supplier), all point-to-point wired.
However, I didn't make a cool logo, nor do I have a cool Rola speaker! (Rola is highly regarded old Aussie speaker)

Thanks,
GregL.

Hi,

I did something similar, using Australian Red Cedar. I made the amp, and matching speaker box.

Hi Martin,

Looks great!
Is that Ebony bridge?
Is that Gidgee tailpiece?
How did you handle the "wraparound" tailpiece extension to the endpin? Is it glued to the underside of the tailpiece?

Thanks,

Re: Blackwood and Huon Pine Concert Uke

Hi Allen, Beautiful! Just beautiful! Could I ask a few questions? How does the Huon sound? I used it on a uke and at first it sounded like wet cardboard, but when braced and on the uke, it sounds OK to me. What is the headstock veneer? (Looks like it could be either Blackwood or Koa - they're both A...

Re: Gidgee and Huon tenor

Hi Wayne,

That looks great! Well done!
A few questions, if I may:
1) How was the gidgee to work with (especially bending);
2) what is the finish?
3) you said "quite loud and has a really nice tone" - how do you think having no soundhole but instead a soundport has influenced this?

Thanks,
GregL.

Hi Jeff, Have you looked here at oversized bridge pin set - ebony: http://www.realparts.com.au/bridge-parts/bridge-pins/oversize-acoustic-bridge-pin-set-ebony.html or maybe 3 sets of the black plastic acoustic bass bridge pins (=12 pins=2 guitar sets): http://www.realparts.com.au/bridge-parts/bridge...
