Re: Another side project

Nice Joel,

I am not game to invent my own amp based on a schematic, so the 2 I have (one completed and one in progress) are kits.
Major kudos, that looks really nice.
I would be interested in hearing a track or two played through that if you can?

Re: Shop listening recommendations

I often listen to "the truth about vintage amps" in the workshop.
There is something about Skip's voice that I find relaxing, but I am working on a tweed champ kit (5F1) at the moment as well as a couple of guitars and a Uke.

I would be interested in any comments about Jarrah from anyone who has used it. Certainly works with mandolins, but I would be a but concerned about movement in bigger instruments. Hi Peter, Just a quick comment re Jarah, Peter McGowan has stated that logging in WA native forest will be banned from...

DSC_0088.jpegRod- Pretty easy to make. All you need to have is the press screw. Thay are not expensive in the U.S. anyway, The rest is just a little plywood and a couple of hours time. Today I was using a little brother to make a bigger brother. Could have used my vacuum bag, but got lazy and just ...

This is how I did the neck join for my arch top:

I have found Tommy Hovinton really good if you like doing hand work.

(Had to try a hand cut dove tail at least once :-))

Re: What dimension for bridge

I think that you want to identify what action height you want above your 12 fret. If you then double it you will get the ideal height of the saddle. Then you just have to work out the bridge and saddle combo.

Hi Frank, I think you are right in that if you asked everyone here to give their motivation, you would get a very diverse set of responses. I still work M-F full time and build guitars for 4 hours a week at a guitar school. My motivation is around the process - I just like making stuff. Before I hav...

Re: Archtop and matched amp

Looking schmick all round! What scale lengths did you run with on the multi? Cheers Jim, It's 25' treble side and 25 1/2' bass side. I didn't want to go too extreme with it. To me it feels really natural and nice. I wouldn't call myself a player though, so I'm keen to get an actual guitarist or 2 t...

Re: Archtop and matched amp

Hi RodC, Great job! A few questions, if I may: 1) What pickup is in/on the archtop?; 2) Is the amp based on a Marshall 18 watt TMB; 3) Where/who is the amp kit from?; 4) Are they Jensen 10" speakers? Thanks, GregL. Hi Greg: The pickup is Kent Armstrong Suspended Jazz Humbucker from Stewmac. The amp...

Archtop and matched amp

Arch top based on the Benedetto book with a paired 18w tmb. I finished this a few months ago and have been trying to get some better photos. Failed at that, but thought I would share what I have. Re: The order of things ...

One of the reasons we (Brisbane Guitar Making School) put the frets in after is that we drill a 1 mm hole through the fret board in 2 places (in the 1st and 12th fret slots, or there about) and use small locator pins to accurately position the fret board during glue up. The holes are small enough th...

Is it possible to use the off cuts from the waist?
If you are only talking 40mm overall, then you should have at least 20mm from the top and bottom (if you cut it out with a band saw) that should be usable.

Just an idea.

13 to 16 sounds more like a Uke than a guitar.

I haven't used gotoh tuners, but they are one of the standard choices of people in our (guitar making) school.

Doesn't this tell you? https://g-gotoh.com/product/sgi510/?lang=en

If I read that right it is 22.5mm from the base to the centre of the string hole for the standard. From there you just decide how much of the post you want sticking out?

I'm nearing the completion of my own archie and your stuff both inspires and intimidates me.
I really admire details like the bound head stock and laminated pick guard. So nice.

Re: Why a neck volute?

I like the feel of them over a flatter transition.
For me it is both an ascetic and tactile thing.
With modern glues and scarf joints, I don't think there is any structural reason though.
