Re: Carbatec 400m Drum Sander Problem

Hi again, well I might be a bit early making any (positive) comments, but, using ideas gained from this thread I did the following. I put extra force on the clamping lever and, as I said before, moved the whole assembly so it sat directly under the slot in the drum. I could not see any way the pape...

Re: Spindle switch

Hey Nigel. Unfortunately not - I've tried every avenue I had available since I've been back in the office, to no avail. Our records suggest the last purchase of these switches was 15 years ago! They have long since gone, but I physically checked old parts boxes anyway, without luck. After that I rea...

Re: Spindle switch

Ah - I thought that may be the model you were referring to.

It is older so I may not be able to assist, but will certainly check for you. Unfortunately that won't be until next week as I'm away interstate this week. I'll let you know the outcome either way, in due course.

Cheers,

Jeremy.

Re: Spindle switch

I happened to see this :D

Post a photo (or PM me) of the switch/box and the entire machine. It's probably a 3HP, 15amp motor.

I'll see if I can steer you in the right direction for the replacement switch - but you're going to need an electrician to install it.

Cheers.

OK, late in with info but FYI - No one currently offers JET in Australiaand haven't for well over a year Carbatec's model is made in Taiwan and has not changed in 15+ years Hafco also have a Taiwanese model largely unchanged for a similar time Timbecon's old model was a Chinese copy of the aforement...

Re: Chisel set

The Luban's are one of the better chisels coming out of China, though as Nigel mentioned, they are not designed for hitting - you risk splitting the handle. That is the job of a ferrule, or something a little more robust such as a butyrate plastic or similar. Luban built themselves up as reasonable ...

You could consider a SKB Baby Taylor... http://www.skbcases.com/music/products/proddetail.php?f=&id=20&offset=4&c=75&s=75 Not the perfect dimensions for your build, but may work all the same. I've used this case before on my own design of Terz and Octave Mandolins (guitar body Irish Bouzouki) previo...

Re: Bocote

As Mark said... It oxidises. So if you want the pale yellowy shades with black stripe, you need to sand, plane or scrape all the pieces evenly. The fresh cut or planed surface is what exhibits the bold colours and contrasting stripes in Bocote. It will thereafter, start to oxidise. Eventually, this ...

Re: Identifying wood

OK, so perhaps I am missing an important detail here but... Although you purchased this timber in Australia, do you know that the timber itself is Australian in origin?? This information can help to narrow it down. Any timber identification from pictures alone is an educated guess, at very best. But...

Actually I don't... It has been a long time since I've heard from Pete. What I can say is this - I doubt he has stopped unless something serious has happened. He has invested in a significant setup and I can't see Pete ever doing anything else other than milling trees and creating from wood (and met...

Just for the benefit of everyone that might have read this; I reached out to Alan directly to ask a few more questions as what he had been informed by Carbatec did not sound right, but I thought I knew what might have caused the wrong information. The short of that is this - The Carbatec machine has...

Re: Indian Rosewood Sanding issue

In addition to everything already mentioned; Yes, adequate dust extraction is a must on wide drum sanders. Cleaning the belt every pass may be required on some timber as resin content varies greatly, even within the same species. Finally, what grit are you attempting to use? The finer the grit, the ...

Re: Alternative to a Stewmac buffer

Nice job Nigel - that works! Some questions if you don't mind. Where did you get your arbor made and of what material? It looks roughly 900 to 1000mm wide, so am guessing it is a hardened steel, not mild - but it's also been threaded on each end. Likewise the bearing pillow blocks? eBay? Any specifi...

Hi Oliver. Clubs and men's sheds are an option as you alluded to, or perhaps some of the newer maker space type options such as "The Edge" or others, but you'd have to do some digging to see what equipment they have and the terms of use. Otherwise you could also try: www.woodnyou.com They are based ...

Another Brisbane machine supplier is Gregory's at Richlands. Talk to Cameron. They don't try to compete with Hare & Forbes or Carbatec so carry better quality gear. Yep, costs a little more. Hmm. I don't usually comment or weigh in on this type of statement, but in the interest of fairness and accu...

Being early days, it depends where you buy from. It is actually the responsibility of the company you buy through to charge GST, as far as I can tell. Hi Jesse. I use a mix of spokeshave, chisels, rasp and general files - all depending on the size of instrument and to some extent, the timber I'm working with. Mirotone Mirocat is a quality lacquer. Allen now uses a different Mirotone product he mentioned in another th...
