Re: I applied too much linseed oil

Yeah, I figured that I have to wait. But I wasn't happy with the result anyway. There were still too much and too big "dry" spots. So I sanded everything down to bare wood. Then I wiped everything with turps and kept doing that for a few untill the rag stopped turning brown. And now I'll wait as lon...

I applied too much linseed oil

My first ever attempt (not counting 1-2 necks) to use boiled linseed oil as a body finish is ending in a disaster. I wanted to finish a swamp kauri body in linseed oil. Probably due to the inconsistency of the wood - burling, change of grain direction etc. when I started coating the body I had some ...

Re: Resawing in/near Auckland

Hi Richard I'll give Matakana sawmill a call. Their website is down, so looks like they've been shut indeed. Cypress sawmill is relatively close to my place, so I checked with them first, but they can't help. Bookmatching was my plan B, and I was even considering trying this on my table saw. But I t...

Resawing in/near Auckland

Happy New Year guys Today I obtained a pretty thick piece (600 mm x 500 mm x 65 mm) of spalted alder and I want to slice part of it by say 5 mm slabs for laminating and use as a top for bodies. Is there anyone that can help with this near Auckland, or point me in the right direction? I'm happy to pa...

Re: Swamp kauri + epoxy resin bass

Thanks Mark! I'm also consiering Tru oil and funny you mentioned it, but I emailed yesterday the guys I buy the epoxy from if they have any idea if their epoxy could have some issues with the tru oil, as I read some mixed reviews about that. Still waiting for their response. I even read a suggestion...

Re: Swamp kauri + epoxy resin bass

Thanks, Richard! Seems like I have the bug :). The next step is making my own necks. The one good thing about this lockdown is I have a bit more spare time, so I'm on it now. The one thing I learned from making this one is how much I hate working with poly. I'm trying something different for the nex...

Swamp kauri + epoxy resin bass

It all began several months ago when I decided to give myself a second chance in playing the bass. Well, that didn't work, Again. But this doesn't mean I can't try and make one. It only took me two lockdowns to complete. My first ever encounter with woodworking, epoxy, and of course making a musical...

Re: Timber supply - Auckland

Thank you, Richard! I sow the other Nick post. Yep, we Nicks are everywhere :) You gave me I reckon very good starting points to start looking for timber. I'll pay these spots a visit. Two days ago I found this random guy on Trade me selling some timber in Browns Bay, so I purchased some maple, rose...

Timber supply - Auckland

Hey guys. My name is Nick and no, I'm not a luthier, but just a person with too much spare time :) I started working on some of my own bass guitar projects. Just for fun, I reckon for the moment. So far I've made two bodies made from kauri and epoxy resin. Again, that's for fun only and I'm not sure...
