Re: Florentine tip binding
Many thanks, That's all good info and great detail. I did wonder about 'knocking the glued on option off" but then- you can always glue it back on or cut a new one, unless it tore out some wood as well. I like your option- I might need to practise on scrap tho' to get those beautiful clean lines. Th...

Florentine tip binding
Hi For my ES17! jazz build, is the preferred method for the Florentine tip binding- 1/ Cut a ledge into each face ie. from the side and from the cutaway as per Eric Schaefer and then build up a tip and glue in situ 2/ Flush cut the corner and make up a triangular corner from binding material and glu...

Re: Archtop plates
Hi Martin Thanks for the reply. Good luck with the 335 build Aside (I played Fender Stratocasters for most of my +35 year career in the biz and have only recently moved over to hollowbodies as age and tonal maturity advance!!!) I have found they all differ ,annoyingly, regardless of country of manuf...

Archtop plates
Hi, A search didn't show much up here. Does anyone have info on archtop top and back plate laminate molds for either hydraulic or vacuum presses? Maybe even a CNC file for the male and female molds to place in a press? I'm avoiding the carved solid top route because of negative comments on cracking ...

Re: Knob Inserts
one solution I have used is somewhat wasteful but it works.
Buy a plastic knob with the grub screw and brass fitting and crack off the plastic. You can then re-glue the brass insert into your custom crafted knob.
A bit agricultural I know!

Re: Gidgee source?
Many thanks for the replies I did find some in Colac via Colac Woodworkers Guild. I'm just using a long radius sanding block to shape a 9.5" board and it sure is hard even with 80 grit. I'm not game to try planing it with a standard angle block plane-maybe i'll get around to Trevor's trick of conver...

African Walnut
Hi, Some time ago when AFT was still trading in Port Melbourne I found a board of dark timber with MATON chalked on it. The guy said it was ordered by Maton guitars but they never picked it up so I could buy it which I did. I made a chambered solid body using the ( I believe it is African Walnut) ti...

Silky Oak Soundboard
Hi Having finished my falcate L00 with sassafras and sitka I now have a new OM project with blackwood and a silky oak soundboard (that's what my club had available) Anyone used silky oak for a soundboard? It seems quite heavy and I'm inclined to make it thinner (<3mm). I know Cole Clark use it a lot...
