Re: Starting Front Head Stock Carving

OK here's the latest update. I worked on deepening and evening out of the stipple pattern and defining the shaped and veining work on leaves. Some undercutting to define shapes and also the stipple deepening also helped by producing more shadow. Rounded/softened the hard edges with a few grits of mi...

OK, call it ruffed in. Time now to refine it, a little under cut here and there and some shaping and accent lines. I think it's coming along alright .

Update. This takes me time and I usually don't get much done until the weekends. Sometimes a little durning the week if I'm not too burnt out after work.

Re: Starting Front Head Stock Carving

Did some more ruffing in. I canned the white line transfer paper( lines not sharp enough and I kept smugging the off. Went back to gluing on the paper drawing and scoring in the lines with a knife and chisels. Time for a beer... http://i712.photobucket.com/albums/ww128/chrispaulick/Front%20head/2013...

Re: Starting Front Head Stock Carving

Well i got some design and layout work done today. Use a white transfer paper from the fabric store to transfer the design this time. It will need to be cleaned up while carving but it's in the ball park.

Re: Starting Front Head Stock Carving

Played around with it a little. Probably let it sit for the week and make a finale tracing and working drawing and start work on it this weekend.
But nothing finale until the gouge hits the wood... :)

Re: Finished My First Head Carving

Traditionally the background would be randomly just punched with a nail or some type of punch or a specially shaped stippling tool. Sometimes the background would have been grounded or leveled to a depth to make the shapes proud and then stippled. But I have a pneumatic 400K rpm dentist type drill t...

Re: Finished My First Head Carving

Well there are the links above and the book. Chris Pye and Mary May have $10 a month video lessons on carving and sharpening . Drawing and Understanding Scroll Designs by Ron Smith is good to read. Re: Finished My First Head Carving

Don't really know to tell you the truth. I worked on it mainly on the weekends and not every weekend. Spend a lot of time looking at stuff for design ideas and watching carving videos and getting tools together and etc. Maybe 50 hr. or more carving but you have to understand I'm pretty much learning...

Re: Simple Fret Press Caul For New Boards Unattached

Well the ends are seated and what you see is shadow . this is basically the same as hammering just with the advantages of pressing . Everything that happens here happens when hammering frets .If you press it in another order . End point is it is fretted and looks great. Works for me.

Re: Simple Fret Press Caul For New Boards Unattached

Also cost and I'd argue that it is a better and more accurate way over hammering for sure. I believe it eases the fret in and conforms to the fretboard radius far better then hammering which will deform the fret more then this method due to the sharp blows and recoil from the hammer. Think about it,...
