Re: Which top woods (conifers) are NOT translucent?

I also would appreciate your input just to know a certain wood is translucent in order to be able to exclude it from the list. Now why would you wanna exclude using translucent woods? Hi Padma! The list I want to exclude those translucent woods from is not the list of woods I want to build with. It...

Re: A tool I like

Thank you Craig for your kind words, your hints and for the link to the review site too. I have some cherry bridge blanks laying around but i don't think of making bridges out of cherry. It's local wood I cut some years ago, and part of the rests it just had the dimensions of bridge blanks ...or plo...

Re: A tool I like

I noticed a comment on not knowing about how to remove rust from a plane. A VERY gentle way is to use dilute molasses, Hi TKAY, thanks for the hint. There's only a "problem" with the knobs (the knurled part of them). Indeed, putting some sticky stuff on them, let it dry and pull it off together wit...

But... It's quiet. It's accurate. It feels good. It makes me want to do more woodwork dammit! This little plough ('plow' for you yanks) plane is one of my all time favourite tools. Dammit! You made me want one too!!! :D Thank you Craig for showing us this one! And now I already have one! ...

Re: Which top woods (conifers) are NOT translucent?

Thank you again, Allen. In Europe, Sequoia surely was not a common (or even known) wood at any time, but probably it was sold as German spruce! Oh well, it's nor really a joke, it's a fairly probable option. But maybe there are also some not so well known and renowned non-translucent pines rig...

Re: Which top woods (conifers) are NOT translucent?

Thank you, Allen and Bob! How about Sequoia? Looks very much like Western Red Cedar. Does this mean you suggest I should test if Sequoia is opaque like cedar or did you observe it is? Have a look here Markus. http://theunofficialmartinguitarforum.yuku.com/topic/847/MARTIN-BRACING-LIBRARY It's all Ma...

Which top woods (conifers) are NOT translucent?

When we stick a light bulb in a guitar with spruce top (Picea abies) we can see it's strutting pattern, the top is translucent. Doing the same thing with a top made of western red cedar (Thuja plicata) we can't see the struts through the top because it's too opaque. My big question is: which other w...

Great job Matthew! One and a half hour doesn't seem much to me for this cleanup. How much vinegar and how much steam did you apply, and which when? Could you tell us a little bit more about that process? No questions about the use of ouzo. :gui Thank you indeed for this phantastic thread, and sorry ...

Today (25. January), at only 53 years, the great luthier Pablo Contreras (his "brand name" was Manuel Contreras II) passed away :(

Yes, I imagine how bad this made you feel. Some of the most excellent steels don't forgive anything :( Probably I should be more careful and go back wiping my dry (or "dry" ) blades with an oily cloth before storing them.

Kim, needing that much oil: are you a full-time blade lapper? :? :?: and wiped clean and dry (I thought) but not oiled. And left on a dry bench overnight Did you lay the blade with it's mirror face down? I ask because I have a japanese kitchen knive which starts rusting (within few minutes) on the l...

Re: Gidgee storage & usage questions

Hi Craig, nice score! :cl Cutting in half won't be enough. you are not relieving the stresses enough and it will most likely split. You will need to cut the halves in half again so you have 4 pieces, and do it now. Very good advice. Cutting the truncs in quarters you'll be on the save side, cutting ...
