Re: A little luthiers finger plane.

Yeah, I was a little surprised it worked as well as it did. It has been given a spot in the tool kit.

A little luthiers finger plane.

It was time to get ready for brace work. So I thought I should make a small plane. Works a treat.

I hope the photo thing works. Here goes nothing.

Re: Attention all Lurkers

Yep. Still lurking. I dont build a lot. Mainly because I love it. So, a Strumstick dulcimer thing, an acoustic bass, semi acoustic carved top and now a twelve string acoustic.

I dig this place. Good place to find answers.

Re: Experience with Southern Blue Gum

Hey guys. Long time between visit. I'll try harder. Terrence, I haven't either but I am real interested to hear from the collective Brains Trust here. I picked up a piece of 2x2 garden steak at Bunnings. I liked the look of it and thought it might make a nice headplate. It clinked like a piece of gl...

Re: Arch top structural challenge

Hi guys. Really sorry. I have been away. Rocket I use Titebond pretty much throughout. I do not however glue my neck joints. The fit is always such that I can almost hang the body if I pick it up by the neck. The bolts hold the finished article of course. Nick the grain is vertical, top to back plat...

Thanks Rocket. It's a bolt on neck. The joint is not coming apart. It looks like the whole neck block is tilting.

It's a worry.

Re: Arch top structural challenge

Sorry guys not a good description. The neck is tilting back toward the top. It seems to be hinging back. Mmmmmm. The neck remains dead straight but the peg head is lifting such that the action at the joint gets higher and the fingerboard extension touches the top. Does that explain it better? I am a...

Arch top structural challenge

Hi boys and girls. I know it has been a very long time since I was here last, but I visit for inspiration and education when I can. I have a problem you may be able to help me with. I am at the tail end of building a carved top, f hole type jazz guitar. When stringing up and fitting the nut string s...

Luthiers in Rome

Hi good folk. I am in Rome today, its 10:30 am here, and I have a day free. I wasn't expecting have a day up my sleeve, but as I do I thought I would try to find a good maker to visit. Does anybody know any luthiers in Rome that might open their door to an Aussie? I know it is extremely short notice...

Re: Anyone used a 3d printer

Yep a combination of a bunch of things. If you go all the way and spend some serious six figures, tolerances get way better. Never as good as a machined finish, but they are amazing. Steve you have started at the right end. Experiment at this end until you know the possibilities and grow your imagin...

Re: Anyone used a 3d printer

Steve the other thing to remember if ya gunna make one over night ya might as well make as many as the platten will fit on it. Your sleeping anyway. This means that if this particular part can be made to the tolerances needed straight off the printer then you could put a small stock away for later. ...

Re: Anyone used a 3d printer

Hey Steve. The machine you have there is pretty much a base model. You will be able to make some pretty cool stuff but the accuracy is not great by comparison to other machines. These will give you a plastic part that you can process with a mill or lathe to a I tighter dimension but will struggle wi...

Hi Steve. I work for a technology association and the company you bought it from, if bought from Australia, is very likely a member of ours. I know the technology fairly well in terms of capability. What do you want to know?

Thanks Alan, Nick, Dave and Kevin. Great feedback. I'll go for a while longer maybe 8 or 10 sessions. Rub it with some 800 grit wet n dry between and let it gas off for a month. Nick I stained with water based and am now just using the hard shellac cut from the bottle at a 1:1 ratio. Layed it on usi...

A French Polish question

Hey Guyz and Girlz. While Nick was doing his water based tobacco bust I was having a go as well. I am a lot slower though and only get a couple of hours each week to do anything. :| Anyway I am using a hard shellac finish. I have spent about two hours each session by two session on the back and neck...

Re: Lutherie - the business.

This is an interesting post. I will preface everything with: 1. I am not a luthier, I just like making things that sound nice and others appreciate. I do however aspire to be one when I grow up, 2. I am not a business owner, and 3. Opinions are only worth what you paid for them. Mine obviously are n...

Damn. Now we'll never see the facts from the Oracle. Seemed like a bloody waste of time anyway, it was going nowhere with only the promise of a sniff.
Probably just as well it was getting cranky and no decent saw dust.

Hi Jo. On the back of Bob's comments to an earlier thread I purchased a nice Huon board. I am going to give it a go one day. Bob has a lot more builds up his sleeve than me though so I am........ Umm hopeful. Worth a go though.
