Here is a link to images of Antique New Zealand Specimen Tables . Its interesting to do the same search for Au...

Re: What NZ woods are these?

Thanks again Richard and Andos . Interesting to know its similar to London Plane Tree . Ive got quite bit of that. I bought a few logs from some gents at a country Mens shed . They sell of excess to the clubs needs and being a community sort of thing they get all sorts of logs donated. I used it in ...

Re: What NZ woods are these?

Thanks for the link to Rarefind timber Richard, Ill look into that . As for cutting up a similar one . I doubt finding such a piece in the condition that it is only worth scrap is slim. And Thanks Andos the list gives me something to look for in pictures maybe . Ill give Graham a try at Treeworx. I ...

Re: What NZ woods are these?

This sort of table , veneered like that was big in NZ . Lots of them show up . Even here in Australia . We just never need to know exactly what the timbers are . We as in the guys working in the Antique business . English made ones show up and they normally have easily identifiable timbers that were...

Re: French polishing

:gui Hi . Ridges and lines being in your finish is not yet understanding how thin your mix must be at this stage of bodying or finishing off. As your trying to fill the grain and get a flat finish with each body it doesn't matter because a good cut back with fine paper with a solution to stop the pa...

Re: The things that drive you nuts

It can be the dust floating around you that's causing the problem. A polisher told me about a negative ion charger in a polishing room many years ago . I never tried it . You have air conditioning as well which makes it worse . http://negativeionizers.net/negative-and-positive-ions/ http://negativei...

Re: Radius Stick for Guitar Back

I had Radius templates made by Steve ( SIMSO ) from this forum . CNC cut in perspex . He did a great job and posted them . From one of those I taped it to a piece of MDF and cut it over size then trimmed it perfect with a flush cutting bit with a bearing running on the perspex . You have to be caref...

Re: Glues

Hi Ross , If you wanted to use HHG with laminated sides or back couldn't you add a heat blanket into the bag and give it a burst of heat to melt the glue at the right time, for the right length of time ? Also, for sides, there is a way of pressing over a form externally that can do solid with a blank...

Good Martin , that's how the old polishers fixed it that I watched. You see that repair a lot with furniture. Menuca yeah , that's for Spanish polishing yes ? I suppose the Americans did have to come up with another name for it? I had a French guy with a strong accent come into the shop asking...

Re: Water stain on French Polished surface

Yes , heat can fix it if its not to deep . A heat gun sometimes fixes it quickly , heat can sort of fry up the shellac though and leave it rough , it gets worse if its a thick body of shellac. A dry rubber with just metho is the usual way , it doesn't matter if there is a little shellac in there as ...

Re: Spanish Cedar

This one is probably between 1740 to 60 and is Havana Cedar,( spelled Havannah I think, in my book on the wood) I never heard or read of a wood called similarly, but if the name means to relate to the cuban capital it might be spelled "Habana" (Spanish) or "Havana" (English). Just checked , Listed ...
