Rosewood fretboards

I use to build electric guitar kits for some music stores here in perth who would then carry out an assembly course with said kits. I stopped these around 3 years ago, kind of around the time covid came to australia, really have no intention of getting back into it either, the margins for profit was...

Re: Best Friends Warning

Yeh, I think most people have endedmup in same situation at some stage. I had a guy bring an old guitar in, smashed top etc, sentimental job for him, he seemed genuine etc, did the top, did other stuff cost was 900, he came out to collect and his card wouldnt go through, so gave him an invoice to pa...

Re: Radius the Fretboard using the Router Table

Nice.

Just a note grizzly also makes a sanding attachment for belt sanders and there is another company from memory that has a jig for passing the fretboard through a thicknesser at different positions to shape the fretboard

These router bits are another good idea to add to the tool belts

Re: Make bridge pins without lathe?

I use to teach acoustic guitar building classes in our workshop and every wood part of the guitar is made from raw wood, from kerfing to sides to bridges and braces etc, the bridge pin was the one thing we could not succeed with jigs, tried many a time, gave up and just used the lathe in the end, it...

Re: New Luthier Tips du Jour video - CNC and Lutherie

I embraced cnc many years ago. Ask away if you have any questions re fabricating parts, pretty much covered it all by now. Also pretty awesome for making inlays, custom one offs, still a lot of work involved in making of the part, its just a different type of work, eg programming, drawing etc I find...

Re: Frets causing back bow

Measure the wire and the tangs, very rarely do i find them to spec, especially if they are from stewmac, good products but pretty off spec most of the time the stuff I have gotten from them Do you have barb files, that allows you to trim the width of the barbs, my test for frets is it should fit int...

Re: John Miner's quick neck reset

I believe it has a couple of issues. If the guitar is built light enough that the neck has moved in relation to the bridge, then the traditional neck reset accomodates its desire to be in that new position, steaming and stretching it back is not addressing the reason it moved so IMO kind of pointles...

Re: Finishing disaster

Do you have any photos of the before filler point.

Side note, any solid filler will never blend into a guitars finish

Subject to how bad it looked post repair, you may have to simply solid colour the top

Not a fan of flat sawn wood being used for a neck, is there a specific reason you went that route

Re: Resawing, Bandsaw drift etc

All saw blades drift, how much so comes down to initial setup compensation and then it comes down to feeds and speeds as you cut different woods

Is this happening without any string tension being applied, that is a fresh clean build not strung up yet

Re: Help!

Easy, if it was a customers guitar I was going to say pull the back off and profile sand the sides and refit the back, use rubber bands rather than clamps. Being a cheapie and you pulled the back for access, mix some epoxy up and fill the gaps all the way around, scuff sand the sides and back and ge...
