Wood Identification

Hoping for some help to identify what this wood might be. I’ve reclaimed it and used it to make a ukulele neck. I’m pretty sure it’s softwood, but not which one . The density I’ve measured at 475kg/m3. It smells very nice, a combination of cedar, camphor, and some spiciness like cinnamon/clove/sanda...

Re: neck thickness/headstock thickeness

Thanks everyone ,all good food for thought. The reason I ask i I remade the neck for the guitar I'm building (after cutting the tenon 5mm to one side on the first one!) The stock I used is around 25mm thick. When i cut the scarf joint, flipped it over and glued it, I need to thickness the head-stock...

neck thickness/headstock thickeness

The head stock on most guitars is around 14-18mm thick, where the neck at the body join is around the 22mm or so, plus the fret board. So when making the neck, the stock would be ~22mm. How does everyone cut the scarf joint out of the one neck blank, then thickness the head stock back from the 22mm ...

Ecology wins :cl Well-not-to-be-too-cynical, the earth is well-over-populated, and the ecodome can only support so much more. At some point the number of humans will out-strip the ecological capacity to provide. I predict this will be sooner than global warming will kick in (but mercifully i wont be...

looferie, isnt that somefing to do wiv sponges!?! I'm halfway through my first acoustic, and its not turning out all that easy. Had to remake the back, oh, and the neck, and install some "decorative" inlay to hide a router incident. Finding time to spend on it as a hobby isn't easy, so progress is s...

Rosettes looking good!

Paint shops will have small new empty paint tins in various sizes up from about 100mL or 250mL. I got a 500mL one recently for around $3.

Sizes- for the small home re-saw a quarter-swan 50-52mm thick x220-230mmwide x1200mm long would allow 8x 4.5mm slices to be sawn. 4 would be cut lengthways (>900mm sides), and 4 would be cut in half(>520mm backs), for 4 matching back and side sets. there would be a little left over at the ends on th...

Re: Pitting on the body wood?

I just checked some pricing via Google, the retail on on that model seems to be around 1800 anyway, if you wanted it potentially damaged, or as a factory second, or a shop demo guitar you should expect some decent level of discount?

I have a 1/3 hP washing machine motor i scrounged out of hard rubbish a couple of years ago, its either going to be a thickness sander or small wood lathe motor at this point. Re: 8 String Tenor Uke

Really showing off your design skills on this one :cl . If you look hard the fretboard is a bit bigger than normal for a uke, in a parlor guitar sort of way, and looks great! Do the double courses make it sound more like a mandolin, or more like a sitary uke in the same way a 12 string guitar is a b...

From what I have read (haven't used it) New Guinea Rosewood (Pterocarpus indicus) should be OK for the neck.
