Re: First guitar mistake -- I think

Paul this may be helpful to you: http://www.heshtone.com/ Fall-away is when the fret board extension gradually distances itself at a greater rate from the strings over the gutiar body. I like to see about .010 - .020" of fall-away at the last fret on a dread sized guitar. Purpose of fall-away is to ...

Yeah well I was ALWAYS a fan of Ervin - no revisions needed here.... Very Happy But in all fairness I had talked to Ervin a couple of times prior and met Ervin and I KNEW him to be a cool dude! Now knowing what we know and issues aside for those of us who have experienced Ervin's books and understan...

Re: Somogyi Vid

Many thanks Ervin for selecting me to receive a copy of your DVD! :)

I'll be happy to post my comments after viewing and listening to the DVD and I will also use a pair of vintage Sennheiser 414 headphones.

Thanks again - You made my day! :)

Hi Ervin and thanks for that - one can now make sense of the two desperate efforts at promotion. Just a thought and not to rekindle any dispute but it seems to me that you agreed to be filmed for the purpose of a Gourmet Guitars episode (excellent DVDs, I have all of them) and not for a YouTube. Re: When to Fret

Dan I did some tests that may be helpful here.... In my experience too, like Nick's, fretting the board off the neck does indeed introduce some back bow. One of the experiments that I did some years back and I may be able to find my pics was to measure if pressing frets introduced less back bow than...

Re: When to Fret

The last time I fretted a guitar it was done in very much the traditional manner meaning that the frets were not installed until after the guitar was finished and the neck was attached. This was the first time I ever did it this way and included pressing the frets onto the neck with the Stew-Mac Jaw...

Re: Lattice Braced Concert Uke

Allen bro you could probably open up the sound even more by getting rid of some mass and carving every piece of the lattice bracing into a triangular cross section..... :D

Just kidding... :)

Outstanding work M8, very innovative and it's great to see the CF use here too.

Re: Taking a Step Towards Buisness

Tim doing an apprenticeship if you can find that kind of an opportunity for yourself is invaluable, humbling, fun, not-so-fun, and will benefit you and your clients going forward. This is a craft where it's easy to breath one's own air so-to-speak and without real honest critique on every level from...

Re: Total noob looking for advice!

Start with what you know the most about i.e. if you primarily play an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar or a uke learn to build what you play. Why? Because at some point you will have to set up your instrument for the player and if you as a player of this sort of stringed instrument have prefere...

Re: Strings and Intonation

You would be surprised at how very many strings are defective right out of the package... Yes worn strings can impact intonation. Also the brand of strings can too - different strings intonate differently. Lastly intonation should be done/checked in the playing position, not just you but the guitar ...

Re: How did you get into Guitarmaking?

For me since my 20's I had talked about and had a personal dream to build acoustic guitars after I retired. Mind you I had no clue, not that I do now either... how to build anything. Then in 2004 I found out that there were acoustic guitar "kits" and even better some of them, not all...., came with ...

Re: Extra Wide Saddles and UST Pickups

Something else that came to mind when rereading my prior post for speeeling errors is this: Do you folks ever wonder how when we are all long and gone one of our guitars will be considered by the repair folks that the then owner may take the guitars too? For example, 15 years from now how will a Gui...

Re: Extra Wide Saddles and UST Pickups

Looks simple enough Allen but I am wondering how you account for the top of the saddle being moved aft with the shim method? Seems to me in my best Colombo voice.... Very Happy that the placement of the slot, when it's going to be angled, will have to be recalculated based on the tilt of the saddle ...

Re: Extra Wide Saddles and UST Pickups

Hi Rick - don't get me wrong mate I agree with you. But I also want to throw out the following: We all know that bridges can split/crack and most of us have seen this happen on guitars too. Certainly you have Rick and probably much more so with your experience level than others. But don't you think ...

Re: Extra Wide Saddles and UST Pickups

I don't do the following but some builders will not cut the saddle slot until the bridge is glued on and the slot position is determined with things now in place. I think that this is a great method too, certainly it has the potential to be as accurate or more accurate than positioning the bridge ba...

Hi Mike and thanks for that. All good points and no disagreement from me. I certainly do not contend that there are not indeed other materials that can produce sound in the context of being part of the structure of a guitar. I know of Joseph and know people who know him and he is very respected. Whe...

Re: Carbon Fiber Use In Lutherie

Not to high-jack the thread from the jerk who started it but having worked with lots of balsa for radio controlled aircraft it just seems to me to be a wood that might be a tone sink and not a tone transmitter.... It's very soft and the difference when using thin CA is very notable with balsa smokin...
