Re: Build Thread: 000 Koru kahikatea/Heart Rimu.

Yeah Jim this MDF is a strange one its chipboard with 2mm veneers of some kind of MDF, its cheap and works well for jigs. @ Martin, Nick yip we certainly plundered out natives if only they had some foresight and saved it all just for guitars it would be one super asset!!!. If you ever get the chanc...

Re: pore filling epoxy - type

If you mean mine, Col, it was NZ Heart Rimu' from Christian. No pore filling required. Love that. The pore filling has been a bit of a bother for me, but I've worked out a method with shellac and wet/dry paper that works for me. I think I'll forgo the epoxy as long as possible. Trying to find less ...

Re: pore filling epoxy - type

What do finish with over the Bote-Cote? I assume shellac would work but what about TruOil? Bote-cote would be no different than any other epoxy when it comes to finish. From what I have read on the forum you can put tru-oil over an epoxy pore fill without a problem. I know Nick finished a guitar in...

Re: Good bye go bar?

Maybe flat bar deck! Tim What if instead of the clamps you had a large bolt permanently fixed in each corner on the bottom board, and corresponding hole in the top board? Slip a small stand-off over the bolt slightly taller than the braces, brace it all up, slip the top board on over the bolts and ...

Hi Tim

Out of interest - how long did it take you to get everything glued up and tightened down.

Re: 'The Mango Tree'

Jim, you forgot to add a few slices of those tiny red chillies :P Very thinly sliced for this westerner thanks Jeffrey. Col the soy goes well cause you eat the long mangoes (like Namdoc) under ripe when they are still really tangy not sweet like a ripe one (a bit like the lemon and salt with your T...

Man, I feel like a mango now. I have never tried it with Chilli slices, might have to give that a go as well. Soy? dunno about that. Oh, and the guitar is unreal, I especially like the fretboard.

Re: Spindle Sander

Hello Martin, Thanks for your message. I have a drum sander but am wanting to sand the edges of my soundboards... I currently use my made up stick sanders and that is fine but was feeling "rich" (a bit silly) and though I might get a spindle sander as a gift to myself.... it sounds like the usefuln...

Re: The Improved Rosette Cutter

Thanks Alan, I am happy with that :D But all I really did was guide the thing round. Micheal's tool was rock solid, the blades nice and sharp and the weight enough that it did all the actual work :cl It made the exercise a real pleasant way to spend some nice and quiet time - took something that I ...

Re: The Improved Rosette Cutter

Hi Col, used mine for the first time last weekend - love it. Used it to cut rosette and channel - nearly left it at that coz it fitted so well, but went ahead and next cut channels for purfling and lastly sound hole. All cuts super clean, did not need any tweaking or tidying up at all. Light scorin...

Re: The Improved Rosette Cutter

Bought one and love it. Devised a perspex template system before learning that other people do the same which makes life easier. Still rout out the channel using a machine but scribe the inside and outside diameters with Micheal's tool first. You need to put in a bit of practice at the beginning bu...

Re: The Improved Rosette Cutter

Hey I have wanted one of these for a while now after seeing it her and at the woodworking show, so I have just treated myself to one. I think it will be cheaper and easier in the long run, since I don't have a Dremel or laminate router, and those bloody router bits are expensive. For the guys that p...

Re: Uke courses - humidity

I just run a dehumidifier in my dry room. Would love to have a fully air conditioned shed, but that would mean I'd have to gut the place, fully line and seal it. Then I'm not sure if I'd ever want to walk outside during the summer. As it is, I'm pretty tropicalized now after being up here for 7 yea...

Hi guys I hope my post didn't come across as though I was 'bagging' your build practices, definitely not my intention. I was just trying to work out what to do about the humidity in my shed, and seeing what everyone else was doing. Anyway, there is no way around it, I will have to buy a dehumidifier...

Uke courses - humidity

Guys I know humidity has been talked about to death, but I just wanted to know how the guys running the Uke building courses get around it.
