Re: Lyon&Healy Restoration Demo

Hi Bruce and thanks for your comments. Yes it would be very close to a FE-17 a little smaller I think. When I disassembled the guitar Steve from the forum collaborated together and I have a plan of the guitar. It is not perfect but if you would like a copy I can email it to you anytime. I have built...

Lyon&Healy Restoration Demo

Hello to you all, In 2013 I bought a vintage Lyon&Healy parlor guitar for restoration and if your interested the original thread is here: http://www.anzlf.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5250&hilit=lyon+and+healy The guitar restoration was finished in 2017 and I have played the guitar since then often. It h...

Re: Quality Machine heads

Thanks Ross I haven't seen that model before.
Certainly worth a try.
I do like the vintage tuners look and the plastic button option will make them nice and light weight.
Thanks

Re: Quality Machine heads

Good advice Mark as a player myself it is so important that the guitar plays in tune. Ok for your standard chord shapes on the first few frets but if you want to use some interesting great sounding jazz shapes up the neck even if only once in a song the guitar can not afford for the tuners to slip. ...

Re: Quality Machine heads

Thanks Peter and Trevor I appreciate your input. It looks like I need to pay closer to $200 aud for good machine heads now days. I have found a source for Gotoh SE 700 series which I believe are good so I will try a set. I will also try and set of Waverlys and Schertlers which may convince me everyt...

Re: Quality Machine heads

Thanks Martin I have spent quite a bit of time trying to find an alternative. The Gotoh vintage se700 series that are made in Japan have some good raps at about $120 aud a set but other than ALS I can't find them in Australia to purchase. The Waverly are certainly the best but $300 aud is expensive ...

Quality Machine heads

Over the past year I have been having trouble sourcing good quality machine heads. In the past I have always bought Schaller but the quality of the M6 series is real bad. I have had to send back sets three times to Stew Mac due to the machine ceasing up. Even the chrome finish is poor and the box it...

Re: Posting to NZ

Thanks Andos that looks like the way to go. I was considering making a 3mm ply rectangular box for the Ukulele and use bubble wrap but the hard case is the way to go. When you say freight it in which company would you suggest?

Re: Posting to NZ

Timely discussion here for me. I have sold a concert Ukulele made from Oz Sassafrass, Indian rosewood fingerboard and Queensland Maple neck and I have to post it to NZ. The instrument has been shellac finished and I will need to pack it well. So I don't want Customs opening the package as it won't g...

Re: Crazy times

I have been having a wonderful time but I don't have to make a living from guitar repairs and building. There where some projects in the workshop that needed my love and attention. My health has been great for some months now touch wood and that fact makes a big difference to life. While I was sick ...

Re: Bellied up top

Yep I had a similar experience building a mini maton copy. It is 15 fret to the body and I had this mentality of 12th and 14th fret to the body. So I went ahead and built the neck with the 14th fret to the body and the body to suit a neck 15th fret to the body. Big issues with the bridge plate locat...

Re: Drum sander

G'day Laurence,
I have the same model as yours with the same issues and have just bought a conveyor belt motor, a PC board and replaced a broken front roller all available at Carbatec. I had to wait a little time but also sorted in a couple of weeks. Great people to deal with.

Re: Carbatec 400 mm Drum Sander Issues

Hi to everyone, I would like to give some feedback on the Carbatec 400 mm drum sander issues I posted sometime ago. After talking with Jeremy via a few emails we arrived at the parts that were required to fix the sander. The three parts were the feed belt motor, the PC board and the feed roller. I d...

Re: Qualities of Spruce

Hi Kim, Adi is traditionally the stiffest of spruce but as you well know no two pieces of wood are the same. Adi is used for guitars where you want some headroom in your sound like in Bluegrass music where you need a guitar with volume. The Adi top can also be very sweet fingerpicked. Sitka is used ...
