I use a bolt on rarely but I use the threaded inserts. The ones I use are a brass with better side fins. There is a better contact and it is the same one Martin used for years. Don't know of a single failure.
My personal preference is dovetail.

Re: Fish Glue....never again.
I have been using fish for a long time. One thing people do wrong is never mix it. Also I don't like it for binding but some will. Fish glue has about a 2 year shelf live and requires about a 6 hr clamp time. In all fairness on the posted links any guitar held in 80% humidity will show signs of stre...

Re: Advice on neck repair
use a glue remover like deglue or make one up with KY jelly and white vinegar . Then you can try reglueing it. I may opt here for epoxy or med ca and let clamped for 24 hr.

inlay pearl
here is a 45 top and head stock Takes time but will worth the effort
when doing the top I start at the extension then I can miter into that for the rim pearl. I use a poly filler and pull that later when the glue sets to drop in the pearl.

Re: neck construction procedural question
I look at the guitar as 2 separate parts , the box , that makes the noise and the neck that makes it playable. The neck , while the last thing to be put on is the first thing you need to think about. The first thing I do is determine what scale length and nut width and fret board taper. I start with...

Re: Repairers might know???
About 1920 the trend to steel strings took hold. Many didn't realize that the compensation angle was needed. Martin also did a non angled bridge. By about 1923 you started seeing the angle included. The bracing pattern is a standard ladder brace layout. The give away that I see is the switch from sp...

Re: A few neck issues
The Martin rod with the aluminum channel is a 1 way adjustable rod. In the 2 upper pictures the red one is a stew mac hot rod. Mine snapped off at the barrel nut at the brazed end the next one down is a 2 way design from lmi again it broke off behind the barrel nut at the weld the blue on is a marti...

Re: A few neck issues
The rod pictured is not a martin rod at all , the failure point on this one and others has to do with the design. In these cases the barrel nut is soldered or welded to the threaded rod. This creates a stress riser at the threads. The rods failed when they were tightened after neck assembly. The mar...

Re: A few neck issues
I have had too many of the stew mac rods fail. The martin truss rod design is not welded or silver soldered on the thread. A much more reliable design. They are usually in a shrink wrap blue or black. You don't remove the wrapper.

Re: Hide glue
As an engineer You make a blind study using what materials you wish to compare. The end result will tell you what would be best for the process you are planning on using. So yes you can make a study of 2 items to make a comparison What we will be looking for is not strength those tests have been don...

Re: Hide glue
I am starting a scientific glue study and will post results when they are finished. I agree that up to now there is little in scientific facts about glues. The study will be based on a protein glue vs Tite Bond if the study proves to have an end result showing one better than the other we will expan...

glad I could be an advisor Robbie and I often help each other. I have a guitar from 1857 that I had to do about the same thing. Robbie did a fine job of displaying the project and his craftsmanship is impeccable .
