Allen M8 Stew-Mac has fixed their binding router bit set so that it no longer matters if you do the purfling channel first or not. They added a simple brass spacer that prevents the business end of the bit from falling into the binding channel if you cut the top purfling channel first. I have both b...

New technology doesn't always make it better. Agreed! :) I always knew that my digitals could be off but this test really surprised me as to how very off these things can be.... At this point the only thing that my digitals are good for is showing change. What I am most concerned about is the chart...

Calibrating Hygrometers (Pics)
As promised... :D I have been hell bent on finding out the real scoop on what the RH is in my shop. I have a number of hygrometers and I understand that digitals usually suck in terms of accuracy. My Abbeon is my gold standard and I have been sending it to Abbeon in California for calibration. But t...

I agree with Kim. Adding more hardener is not a good idea. You will likely get soft epoxy with uncured hardener in it and the hardener is the biggest offender for toxicity. Doesn't matter how much hardener you add or don't, you will still be exposed to the stuff when mixing and when it is curing. A...

Wet Bulb
I have been struggling a bit to integrate a new humidifier into my shop and although that is going well my hygrometers are acting up and I am not sure what reading to believe. My Abbeon is my standard that I send back to Abbeon every 6-9 months to have calibrated but the last time I got it back from...

Good video Bob and thanks for posting that one. I have seen it before and thought that it was pretty interesting then too. Kim W. also has a segment on him on one of the Gourmet Guitars videos (Rick is featured too) where Kim shows how he bends sides. The video shows him describing the water/moistur...

I'm a big fan of West Systems too and not just because it is a local Michigan product. What makes some epoxies work well as a pore filler is primarily four things IMHO: 1) The viscosity - you want the epoxy to be thin enough to be easily manipulated and I like to use the term "mashed" into the pores...

Have you guys ever been around when a skilled repair guy takes strings off? :D Out comes the wire cutters, back goes the face and eyes and those puppies are on the floor in no time. :D It's a lot easier to get the pins out too when there are no strings transversing the sound hole. Not that I am a sk...
