Water stain
Hi. Can anyone advise me how to remove a water stain from a western red cedar top? Google tells me everything from a hot iron to mayonnaise but I trust you guys more than google. It has been there a while by the look of it.

+1 Paul Muso's are generally interested in the sound, playability and appearance not the associated mathematics. As a side-bar...I'd like to ask who was the better singer out of Pavarotti and Janis Joplin? Pavarotti had a huge sound, glorius tone and technical precision that stood apart from his con...

A thing of beauty, Paul.
Re: Tillman preamp....Where did you get hold of a J201 FET? I've been using a modified design with a more common MPF102 transistor. It's not directly interchangeable but with the mods it works a treat.
Your boy will be stoked.

Worth a look is McJing Tools Online. I've bought some gear fom them (mainly because I can't afford expensive tools)
Part No: JL7729
Stuff I've bought seems pretty good and they're quick to deliver.

Ditto to Paul. I'm also from Newy. Also built one with Strato and now have caught the bug. Be warned...once you enter, there is no turning back.

I once worked in gift shop that sold, among other things, crystals. One day, a few people were browsing and one young fella was checking out the crystals which were labelled "Healing Crystals". He asked if they really worked and I jokingly said, "I don't know about healing but I've heard that if you...

Hi Trevor,
Thanks for your post. I'm unfortunately unable to discern one side from the other but it sounds sweet all the same. (I'm not sure if it's my industrially deaf ears or a mono computer setup.)

Hi John, Australian Guitar Making School.......(Strato's place) I think it used to be called "Lakeside guitar making school" He has an annual dinner where we all display, play and talk guitars in between Food and booze. It's a great opportunity to see the diversity of approaches to making, not just ...

I got to play "the shed guitar" tonight at the AGMS dinner and have got to say it's a beauty. I'm now a convert....no more expensive tone woods for me. I was also impressed at Trevor's generosity in sharing his knowledge.

Very Nice mate, did you also do the live back ? Cheers, Tod. I think it is a live back...but with my ample gut pushed against it, who can tell? Paul : Although I'm sure I'll go bright green with envy at your workshop I'd love to come over. Monday's good. Let me know where exactly and when. D...

This Brush Box and Camphor Laurel bass was made out of a piece my old carport and scrap of CL I had lying around. I made this with very little knowledge about instruments (particularly scale length) as you can see by the ugliness at the nut. (Couldn't buy strings long enough) I will rec...

Thanks for the link, Mark. I've learned a valuable lesson. Had an early morning thunderstorm today and the back has now returned to its original shape. Unfortunately my work area is an open carport but I'll investigate building a dry-box and from now on I'll only glue when the RH is LOW.

Apologies, Alistair...My bad... It is quartersawn. Looking at Kim's She Oak I have taken the rays to be the growth rings when looking at the end grain.
The photo doesn't show it very well but with the right finish I think it'll look amazing. Thanks again.

Thanks very much for the replies. I 'm going to plane off the braces and set it aside for a later project. Matthew, I can't flip it unless I build a Lefty. Where did I go wrong? After building my first acoustic 000 guitar under the watchful eye of an experienced luthier, I have embarked on my second build of my own design at home. I have some very nice Silky Oak (Grevillea robusta) that has been drying for a couple of years and opted to make a back out...

I had an experimental crack at a blended finish on a Bunya top using a small sea sponge and food colourings. After the poly went on it doesn't look too bad.
