What I want to know is what a piss ass is. And how does a luthier make one?

Now I'm imagining six string piss asses and classical piss asses. I don't even want to think about an electric piss ass!

I was thinking the same thing Allen and Dominic. A billet or three stashed away for the future would be a nice idea.

Thanks for the link to that good little tute Martin.

I think that we've had this on the forum before, can we get that black fibre stuff in OZ? And some suitable white fibre or wood type stuff as well. I didn't think of laminating some BWB purfling to the bindings, it's a good idea.

Making Binding

I've got some Myrtle that's no good for making a guitar (unless it was a very small body). So I thought I'd use it to make bindings, end wedges and rosette rings.

What's the best grain orientation of binding strips? And does anyone have any handy hints or jigs for the process?

I've tried stainless (20 thou), aircraft grade aluminium (16.5 thou, can't remember the specific grade, but it's hard!) and titanium (20 thou) slats. If I'd have known about the 10 thou blue steel stuff Kim is talking about I'd have tried that as well. Sounds like good stuff. Of the three, the alumi...

Thank for the info Craig and everyone. I've been thinking about Tru-oil as a finish for my first as it looks like one of the easiest finishes to apply by hand.

I've been trying to find a place to get this as well. Thanks for the tip Craig.

Can you finish an entire guitar (acoustic steel string) with it? I seem to remember something about it on Robbie O'Briens Finishing DVD.

That is a beautiful guitar Waddy. And your friend can play! If that was cold, I'd love to hear some more stuff when he's warmed up. Makes me wish I'd kept up with the classical guitar as a kid. When my 2 year old daughter listened to it she kept saying, "Nice... nice and warm" (no prompting from Dad...

I have Cumpiano's, Kinkeads, and Williams books. I most often refer to Cumpiano's. Kinkeads comes second, and Williams a distant third. I'm only about a quarter of the way through my first, so my experience is limited to say the least. I'd buy Cumpiano's so it's always on hand (although it is a litt...

G'day mate,

Took me awhile to get the hang of the lingo too.

Never forget that 'thingy', 'whatzit', and 'doodad' are all perfectly acceptable technical terms. I'd be stuffed if they weren't.

I had three (only had three) out a few years ago. I felt like crap for the first two days following the op, so I can sympathise with you Hesh. Still, it's nice to know there are still good, decent people out there who will try to return lost item to their owners.

Of course, the market for Strads is rather small. I don't think you could flog something like this on ebay.

Thats a great little tip Allen. On a related subject, what sort of mitre box do you use? Home-brew, adapted or bought? The reason I ask is because I don't like the idea of forking out obscene amounts of money for a special 'luthiers' mitre box, but I need a little inspiration for an accurate home ma...

Green Tree Ants are very tasty. I like to lick them personally, rather than eat them. Just pick them up by the head and lick the abdomen. Sounds gross, but tastes like lime sherbert. But if you have too many your tongue goes a bit numb. The way they sting, is by braking the skin by biting, then squi...

Just guesses really. I have absolutely no experience to go by.

I'd love to know the recording setup as well.

What was that last tune (sample 4)? Very nice tune.

Sorry! Allied Lutherie, not LMI! Whoops! As for the colour bleed out, I'll have to experiment with the shellac with and without the stained EIR. I guess it'd be the alcohol that's pulling out the colour. Either way, I'm liking the stained EIR. A day on and the colour looks less 'forced' and a bit mo...
