Re: What is this?
Trevor, it's ladder braced, 3 only: one either side of sound-hole and one behind bridge. There are also shallow convex support-strips lengthwise beside the sound-hole. Jim, the scale length is 24 3/4" so that would be a parlour, right? The box is some kind of conifer resembling Oregon but I can't te...

Re: What is this?
I can see black elsewhere on the neck so I reckon the neck was black also.
More pics including what might be the maker's mark inside.... looks like the word "Chook" to my eyes but I'm betting that's wrong.

What is this?
Fixed my mate's Maton and he offered me this little guitar in an old beat up case. He was given it by an antique dealer friend years ago. I'm thinking this is a TERZ but am not sure. It looks very old but aspects of it are confusing. 1. The case looks very old and and has hand made hardware that loo...

Re: To fix or not to fix?
All finished. Did only bare minimum. Top will be replaced down the track but for the moment it is playing like it used to, i.e., beautifully. Mate is happy....so much so that he offered me an old mystery guitar (which I'll post on another thread.)

Re: To fix or not to fix?
With a budget allocation of zero dollars on this repair I have weighed up your advice and started the fix. I managed to pull the split bridge back together and lined the slot on one side with a sliver of brush box. The saddle sits on top of a piezo wire shrouded in material similar to plastic fuel p...

Perhaps a moderator should move it to the Health&Safety section? .... so other ANZLFers don't make the same mistake.

Re: Read The Reviews
There once was a luthier from Geelong Whose crack, sack and back hair grew long And though he knew he'd be bruised A scraper was used Man! They sure breed 'em tough in Geelong. The best part of this stunt was that his tool was left blunt But disclosing which tool would be wrong. And now some jerk on...

Re: Purchase
Three problems with that, Markus
1. She's one in seven billion
2. Someone broke the mold
3. Patent laws forbid it......unless, of course, I modify her design in some way....hmmmm???... now ya got me thinkin'.

Re: Purchase
I opened my copies today. My wife purchased them at the AGMS dinner in July.
A fabulous gift...autographed and all.
(I'm starting to think she'd prefer if I was down the shed.)

I've always understood the title "Master" originally meant one who has apprentices under him... a teacher, i.e., the Master of apprentices. I think it's only in modern times that it has been used to suggest some elite status. Master Builder, Brewer, Baiter. Ah Dekka , your one of the Funniest amatu...

Re: Melbourne Guitar Makers Festival
ANZMcLF .....with fries. That's funny! I'll give you points for that! I will clarify what I meant by McLuthiers though. If you get on some of the bigger, international forums it seems that every kid who owns a jigsaw and a router and has build half a guitar is trying to take on customers and start ...

It sounds like you've reached some sort of pinnacle, Allan. :cl I build for fun, therapy, the challenge, and the desire to learn new skills as well as the mental exercise (Got to keep the Alzheimers at bay.) but I salute any kid that has the belief in themselves to take a router and a jigsaw and cha...

Re: Boiling sides?
Thanks for the replies, blokes. For some reason I had it in my head that thicker was better, e.g. 3mm, and that 2.6mm was a compromise. :? I'm sure all will be revealed when I unwrap Trevor's books in a week and a half. I'm thinking maybe I should do the cutaway first so I'm not having to adjust it ...

Re: Boiling sides?
I've got a home-made bending iron but I'm half-way through making a bender with an internal heat-source. The iron gets hot enough to scorch if I overdo it. I soak the timber prior and spray as I go. Thickness is around 2.6mm. Woods I've tried include :- Fijian Mahogany, curly Red Shorea, Tassie Oak,...

Boiling sides?
When I'm bending sides, I seem to have no trouble initially and then all of a sudden....C_R_A_C_K! This then brings on a wobbly that ends in something being smashed and me shouting at pieces of wood. Anyway, on my side-bending google journey I came across a classical maker boiling sides in a ...

Re: To fix or not to fix?
The pic doesn't really show it but there's a dip in the top between the bridge and the end of the fretboard of about 4mm. I don't think any braces have let go. The saddle is interesting; about 6mm thick and curved. I need to find out what kind of pickup it has before I mess with the bridge. It's pro...

Re: To fix or not to fix?
Yeah, Jeff the bridge has two splits. How would I go about fixing the roll in the bridge? Would a spruce patch between it and the soundhole do it? Is it fixable with the box intact, ya reckon?
