Re: Stewmac Go-Bars

I don't use go bars yet but for all clamping I use softwood (pine) shims between any clamps and timber. The pine will always absorb the punishment and they are cheap to replace. They also give me a good spread of pressure along braces etc.

Looks really good. I must say, I didn't invent the concept, just copied someone else's idea but glad it is cutting down time. It certainly has for me.

Re: When there's no more floor space......

Good drinking, I mean, thinking. What do you intend using the table jigsaw for? I used to use my jigsaw heaps but then I got a bandsaw and have only used it for really large cutting that doesn't fit on the bandsaw.

Re: Fretboard shaping jig

Hi, I am just doing 12 inch radius at the moment but different radii would be easy. The radius is controlled by the base for the router so you would just need to make additional boxes with the appropriate radius. To get the 12 inch radius I just did the old pencil attached to a piece of string and a...

Re: Passing on the addiction

Thought I'd post an update. I have appreciated all the comments. It is really interesting having to teach someone how to use equipment for the first time. Things I have taken for granted that need to be explained, realising I am probably more confident than competent and my son, being not too confid...

Re: Which paper for logos/details?

Parchment from OfficeWorks is what I use too. I also spray it with fixative after printing. I also use a UHU glue stick as the glue. This is because it doesn't affect the paper, doesn't affect the wood and gives a bit a positioning time before it sets.

Passing on the addiction

I am currently passing on this addiction of guitar building to my son. A christmas present of a guitar build has turned into a competition of skill as he is more particular than me and won't accept anything that isn't "perfect". What have we started...

Re: Fretboard shaping jig

Hi Wes, I finished the fretboard off with a sanding beam. For the router I use a 19mm wide, carbide tipped straight bit that gets a very fine finish so the sanding is only cleaning up. So far the bit is holding up against the Mulga wood. I haven't tried a gidgee fretboard yet but am keen to try one....

And this is why I love this forum. You luthiers are an inspiration! Lovely work Jeremy. I don't know if I would even take on something with this much risk. Maybe one day, but you have set a high standard.

Re: 18 years between 1 & 2

Looking great Dave, mistakes are just the marks of the maker. As long as they don't compromise the final sound/playability/look etc they are the difference between factory made and custom made. I know I have a few "unique variations" on the guitars I have built but we are always striving to do bette...

Nice guitar :cl :cl :cl Be interested in knowing where you got your Bunya Pine from?? Are you happy with the sound? To answer the above questions, I get my timbers from Thomas Lloyd Guitar School in Melbourne. I did the course there and Chris Wynne packages up the timbers and selects lovely sets for me. I am keen to source timbers closer to home (Central Coast NSW) but have been slowly getting into this caper of ...
