Re: Nedun Dreadie
I am not usually a fan of Dreads but that looks great. Love the side purf. How does the engleman work on the Dread? I love it on some smaller body guitars I have played.

Re: Humidity in Perth - Garage building
Hi Mathew, I was in the same situation as you when I was living in suburbia. I gave up on getting the humidity the the garage right and put the dehumidifier in a cupboard inside. This allows the dehumidifier to work efficiently. I just keep my wood and work in progress in the cupboard until I am rea...

Re: How remove the residue of double-stick tape?
What was the solvent you used? I used "Glutoclean" -especially made for getting rid of stickers. It contains naphta and tridecet-9 (what ever this is) http://viento.zenfolio.com/img/s12/v176/p1177800009.jpg Thanks Viento, I once removed the clear pick guard from my 10 year old larrivee OM. I used n...

Re: How remove the residue of double-stick tape?
What was the solvent you used? I tried naphta which took off some of the residue but left some patches over. Then I tried a solvent which is made to soften and take off stickers. I made a probe on a piece of nitro finished ply wood before touching the guitar. This worked and I could rub off nearly a...

Re: New Luthier Tips du Jour Video - Shellac & sawdust pore
Thanks Allen I am definitely going to give this a try myself. Seems like it would be particularly good on guitar necks under an oil finish. Really like the idea of pore filling and spraying the same day.

Re: New Luthier Tips du Jour Video - Shellac & sawdust pore
I just tried this method on 2 Baritone ukes and I'm pleased with the results. It is a bit of work (lots of elbow grease) but I pore filled both instruments and got the first couple of coats of lacquer on in one day. Just not even remotely possible when using epoxy for the pore fill. Hi Allen, Just ...

Re: Wipe-on finish for acoustic guitar
Thanks for the info. I am gonna give this a try next time :) Jeremy, Yes I gave them a coat of thinned (20% turps) Feast Watson Sander Sealer. I usually stop at eight coats of Tru Oil but I have a Uke that I'm now up to 11 coats and can confirm what others have said. It just gets better the more coa...

Re: Build thread - Blackwood & Bunya Dreadnought
To get down to 1.5mm and still sound good the wood needs to be as stiff as anything.... I won't be venturing into that territory though, it's 2+ which from what a gather is acceptable. I built a WRC guitar about the size of a dread and it came in over 3mm (using trev's calcs). 2mm seems thin to me.

Re: I have a problem with WoodRat
Your half way there. I say sit it aside and get to it when you can. It's looking good! It is looking good and Woodrat did 100% of the work! I am tempted to keep it for the long haul and hopefully get to it some day soon. Or even go along to a building class and finish it off there. I am no expert b...

I just received the latest issue of GALs American Lutherie. In it are the following useful articles: 1. "Why Build a Multiscale Guitar" by Ralph Noval. Includes instructions for a nifty template for slotting multiscale fretboards on your table saw. 2. Contemporary Ukelele Making - neck-Joining Meth...

Re: Pore filler for nitrocellulose finish
I tried Z-poxy first and it sunk back in the pores after about a year. I switched to boatcote and it came out fantastic and still looks great after a year and a half. Sands easier than Z-poxy too. I'd be very interested to see a long term comparison on the z-poxy V's boat cote. (Although your year/...

Re: All Aussie timber superstrat build
Makes sense, thanks Allan. BTW what makes this a superstrat? The term Superstrat comes from the 1980's when the strat shape was given a bit of a makeover by many different manufacturers. Most featured higher gain pickups in the form of humbuckers, full floating bridges with locknuts. The term these ...

Wow the fretboard is cool!
BTW what makes this a superstrat? Seems like it has very little in common with a strat. More like an ibanez. Very cool none the less .
