Re: New GST rules

My experience of late. I had a few imports shipped through DHL. Both over AUD $1000 but not much. None of my suppliers (USA,Germany, India) charged GST. On each shipment, I was hit with GST, duty (on ebony and some tools) and an $83 customs fee, all to be paid up front for the shipment to be release...

Re: cheap shopvac with power takeoff

also I figure in MY shop the sanding machines get perhaps 5-10 minutes total running time per day max, and the Bandsaw maybe 2-5 minutes max. so there's not a lot of wear and tear on the vacs. if I was doing a lot of machining or. thickness sanding, it'd be a different matter. we don't use any Power...

Re: cheap shopvac with power takeoff

well Martin ideally I'd have a dust deputy on all my vacs but I don't. And a DD takes up precious room. for now I keep the dust deputy for the sanding machines and at the moment I'm just using a straight vac on the Bandsaw. sure, the Ozeto won't compare with any festool performance wise but at that ...

cheap shopvac with power takeoff

Bunnings now have an Ozito wetndry shopvac with power takeoff for $79. Hard to go past that - getting a few for the shop and to go with my dust deputy.

Bit noisy but they work fine.

if an american retailer can import them from china or taiwan and sell for USD$130 and still make a 200% profit, then surely an aussie retailer can do the same :-/

Re: pattern makers vise at Carbatec at last!

Carbatec and the other importers already have containers full of ironwork coming regularly. all they need to do is put in a bunch of these with their next shipment!

Re: pattern makers vise at Carbatec at last!

well that's why I just think Carbatec should carry it. they have Taiwanese suppliers I'm sure. they could just put a hundred or so in their next shipment of heavy steel things. And I'm sure they'd sell. how many instrument makers are there here? must be hundreds. I made one, it was ok, but nothing n...

No sorry it hasn't happened yet. but wouldn't it be good if they did carry it? I've been sending requests for them to add it to their stock lines. I'm suggesting that you guys hop onto their facebook page or website and do likewise. I just put a lot of money on one from Stewmac. Postage to Oz costs ...

Re: ebonising wood

black hair dye, the two part mix like Clairol and so on, works wonders on pale ebony and many other woods to get a long lasting deep black that doesn't wear off. yes some chemical reaction that seems to bond very well with the fibre of the wood. I've tried all of the usual stains including tannin/ir...

It was not possible to really control RH when I installed it. However, I kept the unbraced back in plastic with a pound of silica gel crystals before I glued it all up.

Falcate bracing - bass back

Faced with the carnage wrought on large instruments in the New York winter by the dryness from a combination of subzero temps and central heating, I recently had to come up with a new bracing system for my silver medal double bass that would allow the wood to move while providing stiffness and suppo...

... however, in the space of five minutes I've decided instead that it must be Narra/NG rosewood, as the furniture i rescued it from was distinctly asian. Bubinga is african.

Apparently the infusion of the wood is fluorescent! I'll have to check this property ...

Re: help me iD this wood please?

After a lot of reading i have decided that it is most likely Bubinga. So, well spotted guys. It is described elsewhere as either smelling awful (when wet) or sweet and compelling. Which is how i find it. And samples i've seen look very similar.

I will read up a bit on NG Rosewood.

Setup hint: Put a lightweight composite tailpiece on it with a synthetic tailgut. Much better for pizz IMO.

And, the less paint the better.
