Re: Desert, Gold fields and other timber

Hi Aidan,

Other Oz tops could be King Billy Pine (hard to get but worth it), Australian Red Cedar (Toona Australis), and depending on the size and style of the guitar, you can always use Blackwood as a top on smaller bodies like ukes etc. There's even Celery Top Pine at a stretch.

The thing is, that would have taken some time and "precision". If only the same time had gone into the proper fix.

Re: Stringfest Deloraine

First I've known about this. Is there a website? Hi Martin, I discovered it on facebook https://www.facebook.com/DeloraineStringfestTasmania and they so have a website of sorts http://www.stringfesttas.com/ And Kim, you might be right, I think this one was mainly organised by one guy. Hopefully com...

Stringfest Deloraine

Hi All, Just thought I'd post a review of the inaugural Stringfest held in Deloraine Tasmania last weekend. Stringfest was for luthiers, suppliers, guitar enthusiasts etc. It was great to meet up with some tone wood suppliers face to face. Tim Spitttle was there as well as 4 other tone wood supplier...

Re: Wipe-on finish for acoustic guitar

I use Rustins Danish Oil on all my guitars. 6 coats wiped on with clean cotton cloth. I do a light rub back with 0000 grade steel wool in between coats. Then I finish with 2 coats of Carnuba/Beeswax hand polish.

Excuse the rudimentary playing but I finally did a recording of this Tenor. Give a man GarageBand and anything is possible! The link is an mp3.

Recycled timber small body

So, to yet again try to reduce my impact on my bank balance (oh, and maybe the rainforests) I have embarked on another recycled timber guitar. The back and sides are from an old desk that was discarded on the roadside. From what I can tell it was manufactured in the 1950's from Tasmanian Mountain As...

Re: Passing on the addiction

Thought I'd finally report on the guitar my son was building. Well, after him deciding to take a gap year, and I mean a gap from just about everything, work, guitar building, etc he finally decided he wanted to finish. So with a few extra hours in the shed his guitar is finally finished. It sounds s...

Re: Tenor guitar build thread

So, finding a case for a Tenor Guitar is a little harder than expected. Off to the shed and now a case/road case is born. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/t1/q71/s720x720/1897952_10203493171155886_1364182235_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/t1/q71/s7...

What does the carnuba wax do for the oil finish?

Hi Pete,

I use the wax to get a final hand buffed finish. Probably not completely necessary but I find it is an extra protective finish.

Hi Ed,

I've kept the back and sides pretty thin. When she's all finished I'll weigh her and see how I went. She still feels pretty light.
