Re: What to do with BRW?

And for those of you following on... This guitar is made from the timber (BRW) that I was given by Sidney Gibbs. He is 87 yrs old and built his first guitar when he was 16 during WWII in East London whilst being bombed by Hitler. He now lives on the Central Coast and this BRW was brought with him to...

Hi Simon, thanks and it is a nitro finish. Sprayed in many thin coats and finally buffed.

Re: When it rains

We weathered the storm up here on the coast. Gary finished his guitar and it sounds great! Although I did have to dodge a fallen tree on the way home. Gary seems pretty happy with the guitar. https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/p180x540/11053133_10207108896026748_82991503...

What to do with BRW?

OK, so, before you all get too excited, I am not planning on offering anything for sale. I just need a little advice. I received a phone call yesterday from a lovely old lady who asked if I would be interested in meeting her husband who is 87 and used to make some guitars. Apparently she got my numb...

Art other than guitars

I just discovered this nifty little online app https://sketch.io/sketchpad/# and have made my first drawing (a portrait of Chuck Close after just viewing an exhibition of his work in Sydney). It's a fun app to waste a little bit of time, something I know we all have so much of! Happy New Year ANZLFe...

Re: student update

Beautiful work. Will we get to see more student products in the near future? Miguel Hi MIguel, I'll post some more pics as they get a little closer. We have such a variety of guitars being built, from an 1834 Lacote classical through to a falcate braced, short scale acoustic Bass with wedged sides ...

Hi All, Well, I've been really busy this year with the starting up of the Australian Guitar Making School on the Central Coast. Don't worry, this isn't a plug just a proud teacher moment. Below is one of the first student guitars nearly finished. Back and sides - Northern Silky Oak Bindings - Jarrah...

Great job! I love Tenors and have built a few. I have built Martin style tenors from the 1930s. Do you have it tuned traditionally CGDA or in Irish tuning GDAE?

Trevor's course

Just had the privilege to attend a 3 day course with Trevor Gore to explain modal tuning etc. Wow, what a great mind expanding time. For those of you that know me, my background is a graphic designer. So, how well does a person that studied a course that had no exams or essays (it was 30 years ago!)...

NBN Central Coast came and did a story on our new school tonight. It's so good to see more luthiers in the making.

Re: Difficult Customers

In my business we refer people to the triangle (see attached). We tell them that they can only ever have 2 of the three points of the triangle. There is no way to have all three. It is impossible and any one that offers all three is either lying or delusional. Also, we let them know that we will nev...

Welcome Strings!
You'll find a great resource of information here as well as advice, opinion, inspiration and no doubt a little envy of some of the beautiful instruments being created around the country (and across the ditch).
Have fun with this new hobby (read addiction).

Re: reclaimed australian tonewood

Hi Colby, I have made several guitars from reclaimed wood. The trick for finding something appropriate for back and sides is making sure it is wide enough and preferably quarter sawn. Fortunately, most hardwoods that were used in furniture etc were quartered. I probably have some Tassie Oak left ove...
