Re: Latest Superstrat build
Danish oil over Black furniture stain. I did test pieces to see how it would react and it seems to work well. When the customer asked for that I was worried the oil would lift the stain and it'd rub all over the player, but it seems I was wrong. Both the test pieces and now the guitar itself seem ve...

Re: Latest Superstrat build
No new videos or pics of this particular guitar as it's just hanging around while the oil hardens up, but here is a pic of some others I've got in the works at the moment that are similar. All of them are African Mahogany the same as the video guitar in exception of #5 which has Black Walnut wings. ...

Re: Masking tape that works?
Airbrush artists use this type of thing. Liquid Friskit. Ive never used it personally do cannot comment on its usability. I can imagine I wouldn't want a liquid on my fingerboard other than something I'm finishing with though

Re: Melbourne Guitar Makers Festival
Sounds great in theory, but I have to plan time days in advance to go buy sandpaper, time to "event organise" is simply non existent - with that said I know perry builds more than I, so he'd be in the same boat. My work day starts around 9am, I get home 11:30pm and then unwind till usually 1am, go t...

A guy I had working with me for a while bought some neck and body blanks from fijimahoganyblanks. Its exactly as I described before, nothing like swi mahog. Its lighter color, lighter weight. Same as the planks I bought in melb and never bought again. You have to remember that the geographical locat...

Re: New member Fijian Mahogan( Sweitenia) and curly maple,eb
I was also curious why the Fiji as opposed to others available. Yes I'm aware that Fiji is meant to be grown as "true" mahogany, but the board lengths I have used from two different sources left me looking back at African Mahogany. The African was heavier to hold than fiji mahogany (yet is lighter t...

Re: New member Fijian Mahogan( Sweitenia) and curly maple,eb
There was a guy in NSW who had a container load of the stuff and was selling individual blanks. His website looks like its down, but if you google Fiji Mahogany Blanks, you may be able to find some way to contact him I know I've bought 3m planks of the stuff from Melboure, but thats no help if you'r...

It may just be my imagination but are a large majority of members of this forum not predominantly acoustic builders....even though the title of the forum specifies that it's a luthier's forum. I agree, this is predominantly a Acoustic forum. I hang around here as it's the only Australian forum for ...

Re: Melbourne Guitar Makers Festival
and this isn't advertised as a "Acoustic Guitar Festival", just food for thought. You are right there Allan, it probably should be promoted as an "Acoustic Guitar festival" and maybe it is, just the way Bob chose to head up the post? But as for the 'name' brands of the Electric world, they probably...

Re: Melbourne Guitar Makers Festival
I wasn't trying to sound "smart" or anything, I just found it strange that a "Guitar festival" would exclude the biggest selling market of guitars, electrics. From just reading the details, to me, a electric guitar player/builder in my mid 30's, it just sounds like an old mans get together, not a "g...

Re: Masking tape that works?
If you're taping at the top/side join, you'll get a tiny bit of bleed. If theres no bleed, then chances are there'll be a tiny bit of side build up which leaves a edge, which you need to will need to razor blade anyway. The green tape I use is just green painters tape. I've seen it at bunnings, I've...

Re: Masking tape that works?
How do you "clean" it after you get the bleed through
It only takes a couple minutes to scrape the whole board. I use this to my advantage, as i know I'm going to scrape it, so it allows me to skip some previous fingerboard stages

You can buy them in singles straight from their site
I normally order them in bunches of 12 to get the discount.

Re: Melbourne Guitar Makers Festival
I'm curious how many are Acoustic builders and how many are electric/solid body?
I'm also curious how many electric/solid body builders are featured at these festivals?
If there was more variety it may attract larger crouds. Just a suggestion.

Re: Latest Superstrat build
Today was another shop upgrade day. Picked up a second hand twin drum sander. When I say second hand, I was told an old guy bought it, got it home, used it a couple times and realised he needed a thickneser, so it was returned to the shop. Shop owner can no longer sell it as new, so I picked up a ba...

Re: Latest Superstrat build
Haven't had much time for building lately, spent a day hanging the room air filters I picked up last week and I've been busy trying to get the majority of the workshop setup with overhead power so I'm not untangling power chords all the time. So far so good. On top of all that, I've had to move half...
