Re: Gore medium SS clone #2-4
I usually do it in one hit, Dom, because I like the idea of it all setting up together, but there's no great rationale to that. I can't see any problem with what you're about to attempt. You'll still need to pre-drill for the bridge pin holes and dowel the bridge plate so that it doesn't move when y...

Re: Test data for intonation spreadsheet
You can run the C and E components to any fret you like. If you do a more traditional neck joint with the fretboard extension glued down, probably best to stop at the neck joint fret, because, depending on when you do your fretting, you may not be able to control the build geometry well enough over ...

Re: Test data for intonation spreadsheet
The neck is modelled as a superposition of a circle, an ellipse and a straight line rather than one type of curve running into another. So, for example, if the elliptical component is zero, all you have is a tilted section of a circle. Alpha=0.5 puts equal weighting on the circular and elliptical co...

Martin, try backing the mic off to ~50-60cm. I should have picked that one up last time I asked you! Sorry about that.kiwigeo wrote:Mic was around 50-60mm from bridge area.

Re: Falcate braced classical
I was forgetting that you already have the neck on, being a Spanish foot build! That means you may well have some corpus modes showing up which I wouldn't normally be seeing at this stage (and they don't often show up later, either). At least one (or even more) of those "spare" monopoles is likely a...

Re: Falcate braced classical
Martin, just hold the guitar as you would if about to play it. No need to make things any more complicated. Tap with a small rubber tapper (a bit of eraser or super-ball on the end of a thin stick). My current tapper is a piece of super-ball on the end of a bamboo skewer. The natural frequency of th...

Re: Falcate braced classical
Note also I have been doing the recording with the guitar standing on its end on the bench and mic hanging from the ceiling. I note that you actually hold the guitar in a normal playing position during your testing. Ah, that could explain things. You may well be measuring the response of the guitar...

Re: Falcate braced classical
VA settings are as per guidelines in your book and Doms notes. Im running a Shure mic through a preamp and into line input on my Mac. The mic is 50-60mm from bridge centre and Im tapping on the bridge. Recording with the mic 50-60mm from soundhole doesn't make much difference to the peaks....just a...

Just wondering, trev , can you substitute englemann spruce for bracing on the falcate classical top?? also what species of bracing is being used for the back on this oz blackwood classical ?? thanks Ernie, just go for the stiffest, least dense stuff that you can bend. Some spruce just won't bend wi...

Re: Falcate braced classical
Martin, how are you doing your data gathering? (VA settings, type of mic etc.) There seems to be a lot of stuff going on that I don't normally see and I especially don't see the T(1,1)2 go up in frequency as the top is thinned around the periphery. I normally glue the top and back on (which "seals" ...

Re: Falcate braced classical
Martin, are you sure that's the T(1,1)3 at 262Hz? A quick way to check is to tap the back (mic'ing the back) and you should see a high peak ~260Hz if it is the T(1,1)3. Otherwise, you could check it with poppy seeds on the back.

Sorry Taffy. I'm a bit late on to this one. I haven't come across your specific problem, also having fitted numerous sets. However, there is a related phenomenon that occurs most of the time, but mostly it isn't a problem and it might help you sort things out. After I'd discovered how to fix the pro...

Re: Bevel up jointer planes?
I cross-grain plane backs to close to target with a #5 or #5 1/2 standard-angle plane and finish up with my custom high-angle #6, (60 degree) in line. If I need a higher angle, I use the Veritas bevel-up adjustable mouth jack. On tops I'll use a #5 1/2 standard angle or a #7, depending on whether I ...

Re: Intonation and Hand position
I just had a close look at this on a classical guitar with the T(1,1) at 100Hz and the T(1,1)2 at 191Hz. The guitar was perfectly tuned on the open strings and played G in tune (according to my Korg CA-1 chromatic tuner) when I plucked the G (3rd fret 6th string) in a fairly normal position. I moved...
