Interesting article in last GAL journal..they did some testing on ported guitars. I havent read the entire article but it would seem that the consensus of the tsesting panel was that it didnt make a whole lot of difference to the sound of the guitar.

Interesting stuff.

Us colonials are a bit more refined when it comes to such matters. If someone degasses in your immediate vicinity you fight fire with fire....and try and get a wager going if you can.

I think Tim Spittle at Australian Tonewoods has some of Grahams spruce in stock. Email or PM and find out what hes got. The stuff is sold as 3A grade but IMHO its alot better and its light and stiff.

I avoid sanding bindings. Ive started taping them off when sanding off the surrounding wood. When thats done I carefully scrape bindings trying as much as possible to work scraper so its going from light wood into dark wood. Ditto goes for rosette.

Nick, one of the biggest challenges building a classical is getting good volume. Less energy coming from nylon strings than with a steel string. I was taught to build 'light and stiff" and thats what I do. Questions welcome but Im off to work in an hours time so there might be delays in answering qu...

Nick, Ive got a library full of classical references.....Campiano is a good starting point. Courtnall's "Making Master Guitars" is probablly one of the best for purely classicals... http://www.amazon.com/Making-Master-Guitars-Roy-Courtnall/dp/0709048092 Courtnall briefly discusses a few of the major...

Okay the carpet layers have just slapped down a new carpet in the lounge and Ive got a 3 x 6m piece of the old carpet sitting in the workshop. Once Ive got the carpet down in the workshop there should be enough left over for the mother of all guitar vices.

I'll nominate Australian red cedar as a local brace wood, but it is all over the place in terms of density depending on where it is growing, which could be a problem. Cheers James I tried Aussie red cedar bracewood but ended up shaving it off the top...didnt like it at all and went with sitka braces.
