Some good work there, I had never thought about using a strip heater as a heat source, makes perfect sense really.

Did you do the ebonising of those bindings? If so, which method did you apply?

Thanks and I did ebonise them myself using the usual technique of steel wool and vinegar - they only took a few hours to go that colour.

Re: Uke Building Process

Hi guys, Just wondering what your process is for building a uke? I searched the forum and and it looks like a lot of guys use a solera and a Spanish heal. I was thinking that I would do it the same way I build a guitar, with outside mould, radius dishes and a bolt on MT neck. Can you see any potent...

Thanks - I was just playing them this morning and the fir definitely sounds better than the blackwood, it is louder and has more sustain.

Hi Col, They all look good! What is the fingerboard timber on the all blackwood one? Thanks, GregL. I think it might be Wandoo, I bought it ages ago from TimS, and am not positive. I thought they must have been placed there because of borers or something - novel way of covering them up.

uke builds two, three and four

Hi all It has been a while between drinks, in fact over a year since I posted my first build. I managed to get into the shed and build these 3, one after the other. I made so many mistakes on each of them, I wouldn't be able to list them all, but came up with fixes. The mistakes will be obvious to y...

Looking good Greg, you learn a lot building from scratch. Can I ask what the go is with the back and the abalone dots, I've not seen that before. Also, what strings did you use and how does it sound?

Re: Johns biscuit

Thanks for the heads up on the embossed lid, I will definitely make one with a flat lid. There are plenty of biscuit tins around at this time of year, so shouldn't be too hard to find one.

Re: Thinning boards

Get yourself a drum sander for sure if you are going to continue. I made one, but you have to feed the boards by hand, and if you are not careful you can scallop them, so I will eventually buy an automatic one. I would also definitely get a quality hand plane, I use it all the time and it was the si...

Hey

Scares the shit out of you when it happens, and you only do it once. Same goes for the router table, damn near took my thumb off last weekend, I was lucky it only routed my thumbnail off.

Re: Build thread - Blackwood & Bunya Dreadnought

I was curious whether the "bake" stage was really worth the effort, so I did a test with these two pieces using up the last of the flat sawn test pieces is cut Neither were put into a form, one was baked for the recommended 15 minutes and the other pulled straight out. Both were sat on a flat bench...
