Re: Clear "scratchplate" material
Gerard still sells it. It is on his website: http://www.giletguitars.com.au/ Click on luthier supplies, scratchplate material, and look for the clear self-adhesive stuff. You can cut it to shape/size for your uke. You can also get self-adhesive clear scratchplate material from Stewart-McDonald or LM...

Classic OM vibe going on there. I especially like the art deco profile on the headstock that also shows up in the bridge shape. Nice effect - but not over the top decoration.

Man - that looks sensational. No mistakes evident to my eye. What did you use for the finish - it complements those timbers really well. The old man will be pretty pleased with that I would think.
Great work

Re: Can you spot what is bugging me?
I was thinking the same thing as Trevor - maybe the two dots at the 12th not quite symmetrical. But it could be a trick of the parallax error in the photo. And even if it is true it is so subtle that when strings are on it I don't think you would see it. We are probably going to freak you out more b...

Re: The Next Classical
Richard If you have the books my advice is have a go at the falcate classical. I have just been doing my first one (can't tell you how it has turned out yet) and I can testify that the CF overlay to the bracing, and the other new skills that you will need, are not too demanding. I am a "relaxed" bui...

The new layout looks great Bob. It is times like this that remind us of the great effort that you put in to keep the forum running - and it is an essential part of my daily routine! I, for one, will be very happy to kick in to cover the costs. Just let us know the best way to shoot you some cash. Mark

Re: First build - split in back due to humidity :-(
Mark That came out looking great. I am close to finishing my sassafras one that suffered a similar problem. I put it aside for a couple of years and resurrected it just recently. I hope it looks as good as yours once I get some finish onto it. The dark neck really goes well with it - I will have to ...

Re: To use or not
I would sand it back and see if the cracks seem sound. If it has been a few years and there are no new cracks it is seeming pretty stable. It certainly is nice looking wood! Have you built with cocobolo before? I can't use it because of allergy to the dust, and I experienced some unpleasant skin/eye...

Re: MOP nut
If you want something with physical properties suitable for a nut, but with a bling factor, go and look at the corian-like synthetic kitchen bench materials at your local kitchen renovation place. They have a huge range of colours, some sparkly, some are god-awful. You could probably get offcuts, or...

Re: re-topping an Hippner 8 string with a falcate spruce top
Well, that thing really was a mess but you have done a beautiful reconstruction. It looks very pretty with the spruce top. Nice job in matching the bindings, and bringing all of the other elements together. I am building a falcate nylon at the moment (only 6 strings I am afraid) so I am interested t...

Ross That is a bugger! All that wisdom, lost to posterity. I have had that experience also on this or other forums. The composition window is not a stable place to compose a long document. If I am wanting to write a longish post I will do it in a Word document and then copy/paste it to the forum whe...

HI Nick
If I was anywhere near you I would not be able to avoid the temptation. It is probably just as well I am in a different state. But I hope someone will snap that stuff up.
cheers

Re: An Australian Luthier in Paris
Alex (or is it Ross?) Thanks for the tip about the neck angle in those plans. I haven't made an archtop or Sel-Mac type of guitar before so I hadn't yet thought through how the geometry is different from a standard flat-top. I guess that the style of bridge and the absence of a saddle means that the...

Charle shop paris.jpg I was in Paris last week and sought out the Charle shop after this tip from Bob. It is a tiny, but quite wonderful shop, on the right bank, just a couple of blocks from the Louvre. Very dominated by acoustic instruments - guitars, mandolins, violins (I don't think there were a...

Re: Open & Shut Case
I built a Kinkade-style OM a few years ago. I think that Artist APX brand case will fit it well. I bought a very similar one (but different brand) from Guitar Factory, Gladesville and also paid $89, so that seems a reasonable price. In the past I have also picked up cheap cases at Cash Converters, b...

Re: Dry Room 'Complete'
Mine is a DeLonghi too, bought off EBay and it has run constantly for about 4 years with no problems. I agree that it is a big advantage to run a bit of hose out to a drain, or in the case of my outside shed it just runs out into the garden and waters the tomatos.

Looking very good Aaron. It takes me months to achieve a similar degree of progress with an instrument, so I think your schedule is just fine! I can imagine it must be pretty exhausting, but you are going to have a very satisfying result pretty soon.

Re: Headsup - latest issue of American Lutherie
I got my copy yesterday too, and already enjoying those articles, particularly the uke neck joint ideas.
Jeremy, I add my vote that it is a worthwhile subscription. I also like Fretboard Journal, but it is not specifically about lutherie, just fretted instruments and music in general.

That looks great Paul. I am normally an acoustic player and builder but lately I have developed a yearning for a Jazzmaster as an electric toy. Now you make me think I should have a go at building one. I see that you went with the Mastery bridge and floating tremelo - which I have read are the defin...

If you ever get around to milling it, and if it is anywhere near as nice as the stuff Peter C used for this tenor, I would definitely buy a couple of sets from you.
