OK thanks people. It rather confirms my hunch that this really is not a subject that lends itself to hard and fast rules. Everyone has their own way of working and their own particular kit.
I'll keep working at it.

Graham that looks great.
I keep looking through your books and trying to decide if the next one will a mandolin but get seduced into another guitar!
Is this one a commission?

Re: Reducing BOBO neck weight
So not much response, but I have often wondered about this pegs versus machine heads. What actually is the weight difference? Classical machine heads don't feel that heavy to me...? D

Bouchet Bracing Resonances
I was looking at Courtnall's drawing of one of Bouchet's bracing patterns and was very surprised at the height of the transverse brace under the bridge. It is stated as 14 mm high at the centre, though he doesn't say if it tapers much towards the edges. This is pretty substantial and I was wondering...

Re: Reducing BOBO neck weight
Cutaways small.jpg Joss I was going to suggest exactly that. The BOBO design needs that large chunk of timber on the head block, and indeed two more bolts. As Martin says one has to alow for the bolt bar but the other thing is that when doing a cutaway it looks a bit silly to have a Spanish type he...

Re: Bridge minimum gluing area
Nah don’t listen to him!
Trevor Gore in the book suggests that a SS bridge should have a minimum footprint of 3750 mm squared but that doesn’t leave much room for intonation. Thus roughly 160 by 28 is about right.
I’m sure he knows what he’s talking about.

Re: Trevor’s video by Robbie
Mm don’t think so Richard. If you go to his site and look at his list of online courses Trevor’s stuff is there. Something like guitar analysis etc. Seemed like quite a bit of money but I really learned a lot so am quite happy. It’s a great shame that nobody in the UK has been able to set up a sessi...

Re: Help reading flamenco tap tone data
Joss, getting your head round section 2.3.7 could be useful. Trevor shows that you can often get the uncoupled back frequency by blocking the sound hole. This could possibly help to nail down the coupled back frequency if it is showing. By the way I would gently point out that these sorts of discuss...

Re: Help reading flamenco tap tone data
Hi Joss, you've certainly been busy since that first build with Roy Courtnall! I won't comment on the resonant frequencies as there are people here much better qualified. There is quite a lot in the G&G book but I at least find it a bit hard to retain it all. One of the standout things is to avoid h...

Re: Trevor’s video by Robbie
I can appreciate that John, I do not normally like video instruction but watching Trevor actually driving VA was really useful. I had missed many of the possibilities the software offers until I saw the screen shots of Trevor driving it. I’m sure this would be true for other areas in a live session....

Trevor’s video by Robbie
I have just gone through the video published by Robbie O’Brien of Trevor going through the whole process of analysing a guitar’s responses. It is incredibly useful. It is not a criticism of the book to say that a video of many of the processes involved is very powerful. Words can only take you so fa...

+1 for the opportunist!
We are the lucky ones with a workshop (well sorry Martin!) and an intense desire to create, so lockdown is not really so bad - I refuse to call it an opportunity but we can certainly find plenty to do.

Nozzle Size HVLP
I am finishing up a Falcate SS and struggling once again with orange peel in my nitro finish. I am using the 1.3 mm nozzle that came as standard with my Fuji system. However reading Jeff Jewitt's book he suggests that if thinning the lacquer doesn't work then going to a smaller nozzle might do it. W...

Re: having a go at spectrums
Simon I have had trouble getting to a satisfactory state on this. One issue is that you've got gain controls all over the place, on the preamp, on the PC sound card and on VA (at least). Even now I get better results on my desktop than a laptop, using the same (Shure) mic and USB preamp which I can'...

Yup lots of those misshapen and broken plies. As Wayne says real care on the iron and one does get better. I still do 4 plies and sometimes you hit a spruce that simply won't go. Try a completely different batch.

Richard yes I essentially used the SS layout with a little tweaking for the different body shape.

Re: Somogyi bridge
Well yes I think we have to accept that Mr Somogyi doesn't operate in the same market as the rest of us but has entered the collectables realm. Price is no longer tied to functionality.
I do like the look of that bridge and it may also help in removing mass.

Somogyi bridge
I was listening to Michael Chapdelaine playing a Somogyi guitar (which sounded great) and I noticed the little tails that he puts on the back of his bridges. I think they look great aesthetically. It may be a bit fanciful but I wondered if perhaps they had a function in terms of reducing the stress ...

Re: Electronic setup
Clearly you can blow up speakers and there have been some reports on here. However although you do need a fair bit of power to bring up the Chladnis, you don't have to be too extreme. I have always felt the big risk is of dropping the speaker box on to the guitar! I keep meaning to suspend it with a...

Re: Electronic setup
I simply use the signal generator in VA. Feed it through an old domestic amplifier, using the headphone output from the laptop. This drives a 4 inch car speaker which I have enclosed in a box. Works fine, the speaker was very cheap.

Re: Neck Carving
Mark thanks I am indeed doing what you suggest. It is that confidence thing about where the cutting line actually is as you mention. I also realised that one of the issues was that I am making a narrower neck - 45 mm rather than 47 at the nut, which doesn’t sound much but on the ground seems to make...
