Never tried PVC cement. My money's on wax. Seal the end grain and an inch or so up. No splits yet.

LOL. Alcohol & elbow grease with a touch of olive oil. Pretty much as non-toxic a finish as you can find. Little slower than nitro, but it really brings out the warmth and color of the wood. Cost you around $20 to get it going. The key is to prep the instrument well prior to finishing. Put on some g...

While I have never met him or read his recent books I have followed Mr Somogyi's career for a good many years, I can say this about him; his ideas seem to be based on sound, practical, and hard won experience. I plan on purchasing his books when I can. On a side note, thanks Nick for posting the lin...

Paul that looks like something out of a Sci-Fi movie. Such an erie red/orange glow. I agree, stay inside as much as possible. I think I would wear a dust mask when outside. I've seen the sun blocked out by smoke from forest fires, but not to that degree. That's a lot of dust!

Really nice. Good looking stuff there. I don't know anything about that type of wood, but if it keeps any of that color... WOW!
One question, do you re-saw before it seasons a bit?

Bob was kind enough to upload the pdf's onto the server. Basically print out full size (no scaling) onto 8.5 X 11 letter size sheet and glue onto sheet stock (I use 3/8") and cut away. Next I add a fence at 90 deg for the female and 91.5 deg on the male. For the male I just joint (rip on saw would w...

I'm with Nick; even a simple rosette is worth it. Maybe pre-make a rosette and inlay it? I think segments allow a bit more latitude in the joinery as opposed to lines like BWBWB.

Being a sufferer of WAS for the past 25 years all I can say is the only cure/relief is: GET MORE WOOD! That and spending time in rehab (aka re-sawing)
May the dust be on you.

Seriously, with regards to the "banjo heritics" here :P Depending on the level & type of banjo you want to build there is a lot of stuff out there. I agree with the binding choice. While I like walnut, RW "just looks classy" and it resists dings a bit better too.

That's a pretty cool solution to adding heft to a bolt on neck. Any idea what the weight of the added CF & wood brace was?
Well done to say the least!
