Re: Binding The only way out?
I don't have a tang nipper. I use this little jig to hold fretwire upside down and file tang off. Takes 30 mins to make. Every now & then i have to cut a a new 'trench' in the ply. Works gine for me. Frank

Re: Tru Oil alternatives
I got tru-oil from gun shop. I wasn't bothered by $13 for small bottle due to short shelf life. I like and have used the Whittles wax product Mark discussed above. But again once the tin is open, i think it's buggered after 6-12 months. Can someone confirm that? Furthermore i went to buy 1 litre rec...

Re: The 5 minute fretboard
Ok - so u and others shape neck before gluing fingerboard. The books i learned from attach fb first then carve neck. So now i have to consider benefits of change of approach!!
Thnx.
Thnx.

Re: The 5 minute fretboard
Apologies - by taper I mean, 1-11/16" at nut end and 2-1/8" at the 12th fret.

Thnx Steve. How do u do the final taper?
I use my saw bench and keep nudging till i get to my pencil line!! Accurate enough but terribly inefficient and not the approach of a craftsman!

I don;'t want to risk the GRAB possibility until I get a feel for it with smaller gear.
I'm going to try 3" 3M pads in a variable speed drill.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Re: Small Handheld polisher
Thnx Wayne. Hadn't come across the term "skin" before.
I have a drill press but nervous about using it. Would prefer hand held approach.
Will see if there are other suggestions else may resort to hand drill attachments.

Small Handheld polisher
With xmas approaching I'm putting in a request for a small hand held polisher. Would like to keep cost under $200. I like allen's 3" snapon pistol buff but would prefer power to air driven plus it's a bit over my budget. Here is a very old post with lots of good info on the subject of polishing tool...

Re: How to top swap
Thnx again Steve. Couple of comments & question . Initially i expected u to just break the old top out. To then see the many benefits of a non-destructive approach was enlightening. To even use the old braces !!! I suppose u re-used old bridge as well. I noticed u cut the binding rebate with hand he...

I took mine one more step today but not as intricate as yours yet. Still quite time consuming.

Re: Mirocat finishing query
Thnx Trevor. I will try this approach to sanding blocks. The main thing I have got out of all this, because of your comments yesterday, is that I need to adapt the approach better to what is happening and not be so formulaic/rigid. Today I changed the technique - much wetter, lighter touch and more ...

Re: Mirocat finishing query
Thnx Trevor for all the possibilities. The frustrating thing about 'teach yourself finishing " using the written words of others is that i can never be too sure about too soft/too hard, too wet/too dry etc. However I haven't experienced this before on about 12 guitars - technique & sanding block are...

Thnx steve. Yep - drop of detergent added. Also soaked sandpaper overnight.
I assumed thinner & retarder doesn't have shelf life - over 3 yr old.

Mirocat finishing query
Strange thing happening in final sanding/levelling of a Mirocat finish today. Sanding wet with P600 wet/dry. The paper clogs up pretty quickly and doesn't readily wash off when I dip back in water. Like lots of small pellets of finish. sp1.jpg Preparation to this point if it helps.... - new tin of M...

Re: Non conventional neck reset how to..

I have a set of those clamps also but never feel they provide the pressure needed for jobs like that so always use ...

Some key skills such as finishing or sharpening can develop quite quickly if u have access to the right learning resources. For those of us who start with minimal skills, we have access to so much info these days yet , for me, many categories of skills have developed slowly because i relied so much ...

'Old' shellac flakes
I'm gearing up to spray finish a guitar with mirocat and usually begin with a light coat of blonde dewaxed shellac. I have a bag of blonde dewaxed flakes i bought 6 years ago that are all clumped together in a solid blob. A bit of a search indicated this is still usable - best to break it up a bit (...

Back replacement
After reading about all the things not to do to avoid a back splitting , i get one back (built 7 years ago) and i knew at the time i was pushing it. RH in mid 60's, cut a fair way of the quarter. Client (sister thank goodness) lives in northern NSW which had an extremely dry spell in recent 2 months...

Broken headstock
Nephew showed me his broken SG tonight. Local guitar store glued it back. It held for couple of weeks then came apart again. Don't know what glue they used or method. No evidence of glue in the reopened break which surprises me. Would appreciate yr advice. With nothing to lose i would try to reglue ...
