Re: Tiger Myrtle and Cedar Baritone
Thanks Allen, I think I am going to give it a shot. I find the finish the hardest part of the build. I have done 3 so far in mirotone gloss with varing results, all because of lack of experience. This time I am going to really take my time, take in all the info about gun and pressure setup etc. and ...

Re: Side bending with Fox bender
I agree. I just bent some black walnut at 2.2mm. While thicknessing I noticed that there is a big difference between 2.5 and 2.2. Sides feel very stiff to me at 2.5.

Re: Tiger Myrtle and Cedar Baritone
Thanks for the reply Allen, makes sense. So how do you deal with overspray? I could imagine if spraying the sides last you would get a powdery overspray on the top and back and the reverse being true for the sides?Allen wrote:Your last spray session has to be spot on, as "what you see is what you get"

Hi Allen,
Really nice work. How different is the process of using the %60 gloss to the full gloss mirotone?

I am no expert but I sharpen my stewmac binding cutter easily with a small DMT dimond plate. Similar to this video.

Interesting product
Just read about an interesting pore filler on another forum. It is a UV cure product but only needs sunlight to cure. http://solarez.com/products/polyester-uv-cure-grain-sealer/ Here is a video of a guy using the pore filler and top coat. https://youtu.be/xgSYSdou7Eo Someone mentioned that they used...

Re: Side bending on a hot pipe demo
I hand bend everything now, and then pop it on the form to set the shape with a heat blanket. Works a treat on the very tight bends of my ukes. So you pre bend by hand and then put it into a fox style bender to set? I like this idea. I just bent my 4th set of sides with a blanket and I am never hap...

Re: Engelmann/Rosewood Dread cutaway - built with the assistance of CNC
Nice work Allan,
In my opinion the CNC was underused .
How thick was was that bridge plate? Looked pretty beefy in the video.
Well done on the finish, you have clearly mastered the art of finishing.

Re: making an electric guitar shim
Stewmac sell them http://www.stewmac.com/Materials_and_Supplies/Bodies_and_Necks_and_Wood/Electric_Guitar_Bodies_and_Necks_and_Wood/Electric_Guitar_Necks/StewMac_Bolt-on_Neck_Shims.html But I would probably do as Martin said (or use my belt sander but you don't have one). Edit: Sorry I should have c...

Would it work just as well with a steel string M&T? I wonder if you would get any blowout on the body side of the heel.

Neck heel table saw method
Having just acquired an old table saw I am finding tons of new uses for it. I was wondering if anyone had tried cumpianos method of shaping the heel using a table saw found here http://www.cumpiano.com/#!classical-neck-blank-2/ca5j https://static.wixstatic.com/media/34fe7a_fe7af681b468423180acdafd5a...

Re: Blackwood and Huon Pine Concert Uke
I found it actually quite easy. Certainly didn't take any longer than a full gloss lacquer finish. You really need to get the pore filling done before moving on to bodying up if you are going for that look. It's possible to manipulate the shellac some to fill small pores, but best to get most of th...

Re: Blackwood and Huon Pine Concert Uke
It's a full on French Polish. Pumice pore filling and using blonde shellac as a base and then a couple of skinny sessions with some garnet shellac to unify the color and give a very slight warm glow. Followed with more blonde. I bought the shellac from Shellac Shack in the USA. I built a soprano fo...

Re: Blackwood and Huon Pine Concert Uke
That looks really great Allen, I have been considering trying french polish on the guitar I am currently building. How did you approach it? I was considering trying hard shellac and maybe watching Robbie O'Brien tutorials. I know there is a bit of technique involved but you probably picked it up qui...

Re: Spraying - what gear is everyone using?
I have only sprayed 3 guitars (using mirotone) but I have had good results with one of these http://gngsales.com.au/products/details/s-106-gravity-gun-14-mm-s-106-1g/ and following Allen's great advice in the tutorials section. I find it toxic as hell. I get a strange rash if I dry sand or get any o...

When you say route, do you have some sort of jig for lining it all up or are you using a cnc machine?
