That looks completely awesome - and exhausting. The quality of work that I can see there is fantastic, and it must be really inspiring for the five of them to be there working together (as well as for you, Steve). Thanks Mark, it certainly is all the above. How is the humidity - down the road from ...

Sydney Guitar Making Course - Intensive, Jan 2022 photo journal - very photo heavy
Hey all. Thought I'd give a look into my intensive guitar making course running from my Sydney workshop. This course started on Jan 3rd and runs for 15 days Mon - fri / 3 weeks. Its a crazy 15 days - for me and the students. I take a well needed weeks holiday at the end of each of these courses. I r...

Re: Puzzled re adding mass etc…
Firstly.
How does the guitar sound? Is there something wrong (acoustically) with it? Why do you want to move the top freq?
If you havent strung up, do that first.

Re: Chisel set
Food for thought..... When i started my hobby of guitar building i went out and bought a bunch of the chinese made handtools mainly being chisels and planes: luban, woodriver, and other no name stuff etc. Many years on i have none of these tools left, with the exception of 1 plane (a woodriver thats...

Re: Video tutes
Thanks guys. Hi Steve, I would like to suggest: How to guarantee that the bridge is square across the soundboard; and Calculating nut to saddle distance. I find that a bit confusing (Including Ukuleles). (It's that - adding a bit extra to the lower half that's puzzling). Thank you - Cheers - PH I th...

Hi Andrew.
It doesnt bend at all, well the set we attempted certainly wouldnt.
I had a student buy a uke set to test it out. With every bending method known to man we tryed to bend the sides, CRACK!

Re: Australian Red Cedar
Toona Ciliata. Love the stuff for necks. I use it for necks on about 75% of the guitars i make. From time to time I also used it for back braces and tentelones when im going for a super lightweight flamenco blanca. Super stiff. Super light. Super stable. Carves well, although some pieces can be very...

Re: Falcate - without CF or epoxy
Anyone built a falcate braced guitar without the carbon fiber or epoxy? If so, how did it go? Ive had students do without CF/epoxy underneath (only on top) and they have turned out fine. I ask because; 1. a well executed titebond joint is stronger than the surrounding timber, so is stronger glue ev...

Re: Torrefied Tonewood
Having made about 50 or 60 or so instruments with torrefied sitka, I can tell you that it isn't stiffer having been through the torrification process. For the work I do, I find regular sitka too heavy and too stiff. So I don't use it. Baking the wood in an oxygen free oven (torrification) makes the...

Re: Glue not sticking
I'm no expert on glues, could be way off and happy to be proven wrong here. I believe titebond original soaks a tiny amount into the surfaces of the 2 mateing pieces of wood, while protein glues (Hide glue etc) sits as a layer between the 2 surfaces. In which case titebond will/should provide a bet...
