Re: Stew Mac Binding Jig
I have the router jig which is nice and simple and compact. Its a good idea to make the surface under the jig nice and slippery with laminex or something similar like Bob's appears to be. You want the cradle to slide around easily with no hangups. The SM cradle is a hassle though. For changes in gu...

Re: Stew Mac Binding Jig
I think they just grab a handful of parts and toss them in a bag. I had a bunch of stuff left over after finishing assembly. Works fine though, and definitely worth the money.

Just a gut feeling but i'd be going for less resistance rather than more if what you've tried kills everything.

Re: Shed ideas
Rather than buying a steel shed, and then having to frame it up internally to be able to line it, why not use standard domestic stud wall and roof truss construction from the start. Then you can do a proper job rather than a conversion, and insulate walls and ceiling with foil and fiberglass bats. ...

Re: Does size matter?
The simple experiment to do is to clip a small G clamp onto the headstock and listen to the difference.
On asthetics, I find it much more difficult to get a pleasing headstock shape than I do body shape........

So a CF capped balsa braces' stiffness doesn't vary proportionally to it's width?

Maths boffin CF/balsa braces.
So standard braces' stiffness vary by the cube of their height. CF capped balsa braces' stiffness vary relative to their height. (Thanks Jeff). Has anyone done any testing for stiffness relationships between CF capped braces and timber braces? I suppose you would only get an answer for a given CF si...

Re: Height of balsa in lattice braced guitar
Not quite Allen In this case the stiffness of the balsa is quite low so it is in effect just providing spacing between the carbon fibre at the top and bottom. This is one case where you cannot just apply the cube rule Assuming that you use the same amount of CF on both, the stiffness will only be r...

Trevor, do you know all the sections and figures off by heart or do you have to check before offering advice?

Maths boffin angle and curves stuff.
If I built a guitar with say, a 15' radius back, would the angle that the back meets the sides be the same all the way around.
* I know that technically it's a straight line meeting a curve so there is no angle as such but lets just talk about a tangent across the first 5mm or so of the back.

I'd be using a hole saw to make the ends from 12mm ply. That way there'd be a 1/4" hole waiting for the bolt.

Re: Falcate braced classical
Martin, I build my ukes Spanish style but don't do the individual tentellones as they shit me. I guess this is exactly what Antonio de Torres was thinking too! He used continuous kerfed linings for the top as well (gluing them to the sides before gluing the sides to the top). I think there exist on...

I thought $20 an hour (four years ago), plus weekly cash bonuses ($20-60), plus the option of a profit share once the US deal was sealed, plus set your own hours, plus access to the factory for your own work on days off, plus paid lunch breaks, was reasonable. What's the hourly wage expected for th...

Re: tenor uke scale length question
That's the template I use for all uke sizes. Just find two slots, 12 slots apart that match half your scale length. That'll give you your new nut slot. That goes for any size uke too.
