Current method. Wash coat of shellac. Sandpaper (preferably wet and dry) and alcohol of some kind. Still experimenting.

Re: Lutherie - the business.
... I say this both because many luthiers seem to be working for very little income, and because most of the posts here never mention financial planning. If you were planning to set up in business on a purely rational basis then you'd surely want to do some basic calculations, which might look like...

Re: Testing good examples
You will either have to know the folks or be very diplomatic before anyone lets you poke a mirror inside or run a hacklinger over the surface :-) Its not so much that they are worried about you discovering their dark secrets - more that they will be worried about your hand slipping and causing a bun...

Re: Gluing Indian Rosewood
Shoot the edges then glue immediately. Titebond works fine. Same here. I never sand after the planing. I think planing gives a better surface. I have never used a solvent either. But I've never had back and sides that I thought were very oily. Usually I get a few sets ready, then over the day I am ...

If you ever decide to do a two layer top with cedar inside and spruce outside that would hide it fairly well. Alternatively a two tone top like Tacchi's Coclea Thucea.

For Europeans the same one is available in Germany http://www.mehr-als-werkzeug.de/product ... s-Vise.htm at 119 euros incl tax. Plus shipping which is not bad within Germany or the EU and with free shipping after a certain order value (EU only).

Re: Binding tape ruining my top
I use pretty much any masking tape I get in the diy stores. My only frustration so far is that the cheapest stuff tends to break as I pull it tight. A lot of the time the tops already have a little shellac on them as I give them a protective coat early on.

I found Michael Thames you tube videos very helpful for bridges and HHG. You should get straight to them if you put "michael thames bridge" into you tube.

Re: Ideas?: Executing the side stripe on this Martin & Coupa
Both the construction picture and the first shiny picture clearly show two sets of wood being used. Most likely the whole idea is a case of need being the mother of invention. The need for deep sides with narrow boards. The construction image shows a large number of particularly solid side reinforce...

Yes, the same line. What browser and platform are you using Craig? Another Luddite here. I only see a completely black page. I have no idea if he has any NZ timbers, however you could drop an email to rctonewoods (Kenmore NY) and see if they have any info. They sometimes have some wierd and wonderful items and have a good reputation in on the forums I hang out on. I've bought stuff from then twice and was happy.

Re: Whoa!...thats quite a collection!...
One that they have listed (an acoustic) for 14,999 is currently available new on a dealer site for 9,500. Nice little margin if you can swing it. I just googled the title "Prs 25th Anniversary Tonare Grand Acoustic Limited Brazilian/Madagascar EMMA" Just how "limited" it was I couldn't figure out - ...

Re: Scherzer 1861 10-string guitar
Got so carried away with the links that I forgot to say that guitars similar to the 10 string but usually with 13-15 turn up on the German/Austrian ebay site regularly enough as "Schrammel" guitars. Schrammel music is a significant part of Viennese music tradition. (The once well known "Harry Lime" ...

Re: Gilet Guitars "Grace" cutaway - any info?
Got a quick answer from Gilet Guitars. Its a Gilet design but the manufacturing is outsourced. So it is one of their lower/middle range products as opposed to a luthier model.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Alot of copies on ebay......Ashley Sanders here in SA had one of his lattice braced classicals copied by the Chinese and it ended up on Ebay advertised as an "Ashley sanders model lattice braced guitar". Tread carefully. PS is it this one? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Gilet-Brazilian-Rosewood-Acousti...

Gilet Guitars "Grace" cutaway - any info?
Hi, I have seen a guitar described as a Gilet Guitars "auditorium" for sale on fleabay. It's a cutaway and according to the description the word "Grace" is in the soundhole inlay. Unfortunately there is no photo of the sound hole or the label. The description says (translated) its has Canadian spruc...
