Re: New Luthier Tips du Jour video - Drilling tuner holes

Fixed.

There was some extra rubbish at the end of the URL Robbie. I just deleted that and - well - Bob's yer uncle :D

Re: Very slow weissenborn wip

Hi Steve

The notching will certainly make it stronger but it's not something I typically have done when building lap slides.

Re: Blackwood guitar

I've built several, both Hawaiian lap slides and conventional guitars and currently have an 12 fret 0-16 style under construction which is all Blackwood. I think it sounds great. It has fewer upper order harmonics than Spruce and thus has more of the fundamental note in the tone. Thin it a little mo...

Re: Adjusting sound

What sort of wood is the fingerboard? And are the frets securely seated? I built an instrument a few years back that was destined to hang on the office wall of a sawmill so I made the fingerboard from highly figured Blackwood. The frets didn't seat securely in the relatively soft Blackwood and the t...

Re: Bending Sides in a Fox Bender

Blackwood doesn't play nicely with aluminium. Koa does the same. It really depends on how deep the green tinge is on whether it'll sand out. In my experience it should sand out. Over the years I've used less and less water while bending to the point where I now use no water. But that's due to using ...

Re: Adjusting sound

I built this Sassafras and Engelmann 0-18 14 fret about 5 years ago.

Sounded nice and balanced with none of the symptoms previously described.

I'd be looking elsewhere for reasons other than wood combinations.

Re: Build a mandolin

Lads - can we keep this post on topic.

It was started by Rod as an enquiry on mandolin construction and seems to have morphed into a discussion of where to buy mandolin ferrules.

Please start a new thread ratherr than hijacking someone elses.

Re: New Luthier Tips du Jour video - radiusing braces

Nice video Robbie.

I usually do mine in the radius dish, 2 at a time, but I like the idea of the jig.

Some pencil "witness lines" on the radius face would also help to tell when everything is trued up.

Have a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year
